Saints of 1966 to gather before Hawks game to honour Baldock

ST KILDA'S 1966 premiership heroes are crossing Bass Strait to hold a reunion with their mercurial captain Darrel "Mr Magic" Baldock.
The reunion will bring together the 19 living members of the premiership team and is to be held in Launceston on the eve of the Hawthorn-St Kilda match at Aurora Stadium on August 8.
The failing health of some of the St Kilda premiership players has been the catalyst for the reunion and it is being organised by Kevin "Cowboy" Neale who is president of the Saints' past players association.
"We had our 40-year reunion in 2006 and considering some of them might not be around for too much longer we looked at coming down to Tassie to catch up with Darrel," he said.
Rodger Head, a back pocket player in the premiership team, has been one of the instigators of the reunion and along with John Bingley has offered to arrange airfares for their teammates.
"Rodger has had a touch of prostate cancer and Darrel's been crook so we thought we would organise something down in Tassie," Neale said.
"I've been in touch with all the players except Ian Stewart who is presently in London and they've all said they will come down."
Of the 1966 team, Verdun Howell and Brian Sierakowski live in Perth, Barry Breen is in Sydney and the remainder are in Victoria.
Travis Payze is the only member of the team no longer living.
Neale said premiership coach Allan Jeans would be part of the reunion and following talks with Hawthorn the 1966 legends will be introduced to the crowd before the game at Aurora Stadium.
Neale said up to 300 people were expected to attend a function at Country Club Tasmania on Friday, August 6, and the following night the players would have a night to themselves.
"We'll start advertising the function next week and it will be a terrific opportunity to get the players back together again," he said.
Neale said he was having some difficulty in arranging suitable flights into Launceston and didn't discount flying into Devonport and then travelling by bus.
The 1966 flag remains St Kilda's only premiership and from the team Baldock, Neale, Stewart, Verdun Howell, Alan Morrow, Lance Oswald, Daryl Griffiths and Jeans were selected in the club's Team of the Century.

I think you will find Roger Head would have chipped in as well.Eastern wrote:I suspect that this gathering has Lindsay Fox's fingerprints (and possibly some of his dollars) all over it. He's done it before.
There are many who bag him, but are unaware of what he does for the club and the past players.
If he has tipped in; Good on him !!

There's an article in the Sport Confidential page in today's Herald Sun, the Tassie early edition that is.
