Why Carl? as much as I loved him as a player and a StKilda icon he did leave us twice to go to Melbourne.SteveStevens66 wrote:If there is one ex-St Kilda player, aside from Robert Harvey, for whom the current team must win a Premiership, then it is surely Big Carl.

The bad advice that has guided the selfish and culpable James Hird has not only punctuated this saga but symbolised it..."

I can only answer from my perspective. Big Carl characterised the Mighty Saints of the 60s. Despite the champions that we had, Doc, Stewie, Bobby Murray etc, Big Carl was emblematic for a whole generation of Saints supporters. In simple terms, he got bums on seats, a whole new (young) generation of Saints supporters (who are now old fogeys on this board, like me).Selhurst Saint wrote:...Why Carl? ...
I was at the Fitzroy ground when he ran through Daryl Peoples. He got six weeks for a four week offence. Four weeks would have enabled him to play in the GF (as it turned out). The Tribunal determined that, no matter what, he would not.
He was again denied in the '71 GF, this time through no fault of his. Maybe those of us who still have a soft spot for him are just "'60s Bleeding Heart Types". If that's the case, so be it.
On the other hand, no team ever wins a premiership for past players, it's their moment of glory. Remembering the past is something that is done in the celebration not the implementation.

What legal problems? Is it something to do with St Kilda?
