When the lights went out at Waverley...
Was James Hird playing?
Some lights went out at the 'G today and Hird says:
"I played in a game at Waverley in the late nineties where the lights went out. It was an eerie feeling out on the ground"
I'm sure he was one of five players who came in on the Wednesday that had not played against us on the Saturday.
It should never have been allowed to happen, and now apparently it didn't

James Hird definitely didn't play in that game.
He smarmed his way into the second part of the game on the Tuesday night.
Not only is he a cheat, he is a liar as well.

It was a travesty of justice.
Agree that replaying the final 40 or so minutes was the right decision.
But it should have been the same players regardless of injuries or form.
For Essendon to bring in new players like James Tird was against the spirit of the game.
And for the AFL to condone it was a disgrace.
Everyone who was there will never forget it.
I can understand some retired players getting a bit confused about if they played in the round 10 game against Melbourne in 1985.
But NO player would be confused about the "Lights out" games.
That makes James a total liar.
If a politician makes a false claim like that it would be the end of their career.
At least this might take some of that James "Perfect" glow away.

The rest of Australia can wander mask-free, socialise, eat out, no curfews, no zoning, no police rings of steel, no illogical inconsistent rules.

Hird worries me. A very good player but this is a guy who will walk into a spot on the AFL commission or the Essendon presidency. Good for us if he is Essendon president. Bad for us if he is on the AFL commission.
Yet this is the same guy who was too weak to stand by Sheedy in the late 90s after Sheedy made him captain.
He was also too weak to sort out team discipline in his last 2 years as Essendon captain. Then Lloyd became captain and said the club's discipline was worse than a country football team and that the coaching and fitness was out of date. Out went guys like Zantuck. That was real leadership. Yet everyone thinks Hird is a real leader. Go figure.
And the Anzac Day medals, who cares about BOG medals for minor round matches.
Now he thinks he played in games that he didn't. Signs of a hyperactive ego.

The only thing that was burnt was some of the cheer squad's streamers, and now Hird's credibility as he definitely didn't play when the lights went out.esaint66 wrote:bobmurray wrote:I remember the crowd burning a point post in the middle of the ground after the game was abandoned....
They didn't burn a point post, they took one out of the ground and started a massive campfire.
He did play in the restart, on the Tuesday, when the Essendon cheats were allowed to bring in 3 or 4 subs.
Old enough to repaint, but young enough to sell

I heard him refer to it thisarvo , but did he actually say he played or was there?
If its the former he should be exposed well and truly!
But I bet if he was questioned on it he would say "oh what I actually meant was I was there on the night"!
I recon someone should contact Fox and have him answer to it on "ON the Couch" tomorrow night if they are sure of his exact words

It was Round 10 1996...
I was at the game on the Saturday night...
I am fairly sure James Turd was not playing on the Saturday, did James Turd say he was playing or was at the ground on Saturday??
If he stated he was playing he is a liar, but if he just stated that he remembers that match and was there, well fair enough

Write up about this in the herald sun in the sport confidential section defending their man hird!
I hadn't even opened up this thread before-hand - ironically some journo feels its news worthy.

Hird wasn't playing but I suppose he might have got confused. You'd think though, that he'd remember the controversy over his inclusion when the remainder of the game was played.
Having said all this, I used to know a former Essendon ruckman from the early 70s. I once asked him whether he'd played in the finals game at Waverley (1973) when George Young kicked six. He said he did, but when The Point of It All was published I found that he'd actually played against us in a final in 1972, and not when George kicked six. He wasn't lying, though.

More to the point, I can't imagine you 'mis-hird' "It was an eerie feeling out on the ground".kosifantutti23 wrote:I wish I wrote for a newspaper. I could get them to write whatever I liked. If he said anything about only coming in on the Wednesday it was later in the game
And tall poppy syndrome? Sounds more like brown nose syndrome to me.
Has anyone got a recording of him saying that?
I was there on that Saturday night when the lights went out. They fluttered for a second, came back on and then went out completely, about 20 minutes into the 3rd quarter, we were looking shaky and were about 20 points down and in danger of being runover. So I was glad when that happened because most around me understood that the general result for an interrupted game was a draw, so 2 points was looking good. I saw Kevin Sheedy in a coterie room bar about an hour after the game ceased and he thought it was a draw. But oh no, not according to the powers at the AFL, they request that the remaining 10 minutes of the 3rd quarter plus the final quarter time be added and played out on the succeeding Tuesday evening in 2 halves of 12 minutes plus time on. Plus the real kicker was that each team could pick a fresh side. So 'Princess Hirtee" and several others improved their line up substantially whereas we were already undermanned and didn't improve the team at all. It was a freezing evening on Tuesday and not many turned up to see the event. We scored the the first goal and looked good until they flexed their muscles, D Bewick killed us and Wanganeen kicked a tumbler from the middle. So 4 points to them and we reckon it was unfair, especially with their inclusions. So if the 'Princess' was caught out taking licence with facts to improve his own noise then that would be poetic justice to me. The crap in the Herald Sun would seem a bit of an overreaction?
Go Sainters! Lenny & Roo are it. Kosi in September would be.......

I am sure Hird said he "played" in the game, I may have to try and catch the replay on Fox this week. (Which is probably more than the journo did).
