Coaches Votes

Post: # 746340Post jackal »

I look forward to this each week on afl.com at someone with more time on their hands should make it a sticky. This week was interesting with the coaches (Lyon and Voss) only agreeing on one player as being in the top 5 (Lenny)

St Kilda v Brisbane Lions
7 Hayes (St K)
5 Ball (St K)
5 Montagna (St K)
4 Brennan (Bris)
3 Adcock (Bris)
2 Drummond (Bris)
2 Sherman (Bris)
1 S Gilbert (St K)
1 Koschitzke (St K)

I reckon Lyon rated BAll #1 and Voss rated Monty BOG and it gets interesting there after. Not sure who rated Brennan and who Adcock (as they both chose LenDog) but like Monty, Brennan was the more flamboyant player so more likely to be picked by the opposition coach while a number of hard workers were rewarded by their team.
And look..no Roo (afl.com has him in their Best 22 of all games).

Love seeing how coaches view things from their box.

Any Comments?

Very interesting on second glance.

Clearly as you have depicted the votes went something like below:

Coach 1:
5 - Ball
4 - Brennan
3 - Hayes
2 - Sherman
1 - Koschitzke

Coach 2:
5 - Montagna
4 - Hayes
3 - Adcock
2 - Drummond
1 - Gilbert

A large variety of players there.....Gee, makes me feel better when I find it hard to nominate the best for each week. The coaches clearly didn't have eachothers best player in their own top five.....

Great post and awesome observation Jackal.

Can you post the votes from Round 1 until now? Or is there some single link to all rounds voting at afl.com?

These links are hard to find. I would like to do a tally as we would have a ton of players rated. Also the Heraldsun would have a number of players with votes too.

only differance would be that 10 to Dal rd 1- making him 38- but also unknown how many other saints got votes.

Finally found Round 1:

St Kilda v Sydney Swans
10 Nick Dal Santo (St K)
8 Brendon Goddard (St K)
4 Sam Gilbert (St K)
3 Luke Ball (St K)
3 Farren Ray (St K)
1 Zac Dawson (St K)
1 Craig Bolton (Syd)

So the tally to Round 9 is

Nick Dal Santo 38 (5)
Nick Riewoldt 37 (6)
Lenny Hayes 28 (4)
Leigh Montagna 28 (4)
Brendon Goddard 27 (3)
Justin Koschitzke 13 (3)
Sam Gilbert 12 (4)
Sam Fisher 11 (4)
Luke Ball 10 (3)
Jason Gram 9 (3)
Farren Ray 7 (2)
Adam Schneider 5 (1)
Clinton Jones 4 (2)
Zac Dawson 2 (2)
Steven Baker 1 (1)
Stephen Milne 1 (1)

For comparison, and bearing in mind the different voting system, here is the Saintsational Leader Board:

Leigh Montagna 21
Nick Dal Santo 20
Nick Riewoldt 19
Lenny Hayes 18
Brendon Goddard 10
Justin Koschitzke 10
Sam Gilbert 10
Clinton Jones 6
Farren Ray 6
Michael Gardiner 6
Sam Fisher 3
Jarryn Geary 2
Adam Schneider 1
Stephen Milne 1
Steven Baker 1
Zac Dawson 1

There is one glaring difference - Luke Ball. Polled in three games from the coaches and none from Saintsational!

sterling work by all concerned to dredge up these votes!

interesting to see that coaches don't really rank ruckmen, apparently. no votes for either of gardy or king (or mcevoy, i guess) despite them being imo a big factor in our success this year. but admittedly none have really had a standout performance.

also not as many votes for jones as i would have expected. hard to remember the tagger. and gram, despite being (maybe) dropped is tenth on the coaches leaderboard.

interesting synopsis on Luke Ball

Jon Ralph for whatever its worth. plus another media scribe, i cant recall. gave Bally BOG sunday and both coaches recognized his worth
I must admit (and I went this week) i didnt have him in my 5 but rewarded Gardiner who i thought was responsible for many of our clearances
So I guess I like many others here probably dont give him due credit for all the in and under hard stuff he no doubt does and perhaps its just a bit harder to pick up But you just gotta love the guy , who I recon is not still 100% in the groin ,and its a management issue with him But who else does it better in the AFL at present? Judd ? he doesnt seem to get right in and under as much though!
any thoughts?

Yes your votes are the only combination that works.
But we don't know who gave the 5, 4, 3, 2, 1
Those votes could have been swapped between coaches.

Amazing that one coach had Ball 5, Montagna 5, Brennan 4 but these 3 players were ignored by the other coach.
And Hayes was the only player that the coaches agreed was top 5.
Shows how important it is to be noticed if you want a Brownlow or other award.

Of course these may not be Lyon's and Voss's votes they may have been delgated to an assistant.
Malthouse admitted he delegated the task.

I think the breakdown is only the poster's guess. We are only told the totals, not the individual's votes.

On the broader issue, for much of this year I have had real trouble LEAVING PLAYERS OUT of my votes. And on many occasions, it's been real toss up as to the placings as well. I suspect others have experienced the same "problem". May we continue to have this "problem" forever and a day!

nope. the only guess there is who gave which votes. but there's only one way those votes could have broken down and that's:

5: ball, montagna
4: brennan, hayes
3: adcock, hayes
2: drummond, sherman
1: gilbert, koschitzke

so ace is right that nine out of ten players were recognised by only one coach, and the only player who was in both votes wasn't top of either. very even performance from both sides, i guess.
