Another goldfish in the HoF
Peter Carey
Yes he played a million games in the SANFL.
But no games in the big time.
Never proved himself against the best.
A big fish in a tadpole pond.
And I'm sure Fitzroy supporters will be thrilled for Ross Oakley.

The thing is that if we acknowledge VFL which was a state league, the we should also acknowledge the WAFL and SANFL, which were also state leagues.Enrico_Misso wrote:Peter Carey

I think so.saintsRrising wrote:Is that the cary that the Saints signed...but never arrived?
As for thecomparison between VFL, WAFL annSANFL, surely nobody is suggesting that they were equivalent levels of football ability?
The mere fact that most good footballers in the WAFL and NFL ended up in theVFL shows that the VFL was the ar superior competition.

Many very, very good footballers didn't play in vfl - there wasn't that big a gulf between the leagues - and not enough extra money or profile to justify leaving home, family, friends, and your club.Mr Magic wrote:

How many Victorian players left the VFL in their prime to go play in the WAFL/SANFL?desertsaint wrote:Many very, very good footballers didn't play in vfl - there wasn't that big a gulf between the leagues - and not enough extra money or profile to justify leaving home, family, friends, and your club.Mr Magic wrote:

The money was all relative.
$10,000 was a lot of money in the 60's when the average wage being earned by footballers in their work was $2-3000.
Today's footballers salary of $200,000 is only 2-3 times the average salary he could earn from not playing - similar in relative terms to the money back then.
IIRC the VFL was considered the pinnacle of Australian Rules Football competition and as such goof players from WA, SA, Tasmania did move to Victoria.
Yes there were some celebrated cases of great footballers who didn't - Robran probably being the most notable from SA and Stephen Michael the most notable from WA, but the majority of champions from WA and SA did seem to come to the 'big smoke' as far as footy was concerned when you're looking at the 60s-80s era.
I stand to be corrected but I would have thought that the VFL was considered by most to be the pre-eminent competition.
rumour has it ross's award was merged with another players award, don't worry rossy, you name will be on the award somewhere (maybe on the bottom).

Haydn Bunton - Went to WA aged 25 after winning 3 Brownlows, won 3 Sandovers, returned to Fitzroy in 1942, then played, coached and umpired in the SANFL.Mr Magic wrote:How many Victorian players left the VFL in their prime to go play in the WAFL/SANFL?

What's you recollection of Football around Australia in those days?
Where did the various state competitions rank against the VFL?

Yes it was but not by the level you believe, perhaps it was by the 80s when the money and nationwide audience drew more players. Also "most" good footballers didn't move - you know the ones that did and don't know the many top shelf players that didn't. Then make the assumption that if they were any good they would have moved to the VFL.Mr Magic wrote:desertsaint wrote:Many very, very good footballers didn't play in vfl - there wasn't that big a gulf between the leagues - and not enough extra money or profile to justify leaving home, family, friends, and your club.Mr Magic wrote:

If you're interested have a look at the SANFL HoF and you'll see the vast majority of members never played in the VFL. I'd hazard a guess that it is the same with the WAFL!
