Is Reiwoldt a French by origin?

Riewoldt is a German name, Prussian if I'm not mistaken. In the German language, when there is an "ie" in the name it is pronounced as the second letter "E" and where there is an "ei" it is again pronounced at the second letter "I". Also, in German, the "W" is pronounced as "V". The "D" in German before the "T" is (almost) silent. So his name is pronounced as REE-VOLT. Nicholas (Nikolaus) is also a common Prussian name. Fortunately, he plays Aussie Rules and not German Football (soccer).

Just over half a century ago, German immigrants Heinz and Helga Riewoldt stepped off a boat in Tasmania, where Heinz began working at the Hydro-Electric Commission.

They had four sons - Joe, Ray, Chris and Peter - who all played for Clarence in the TFL.

Eldest son Joe is the father of Nick Riewoldt, who was drafted by St Kilda after his family had moved to the Gold Coast.

Chris married Rodney Eade's first cousin Lesley and produced Jack, as well as younger brothers Harry and Charlie.

Chris was a Tasmanian star who signed a Form Four tying him to St Kilda, but he never pursued it.

First part of his name "Riew" or "Riewe" is a nickname from Middle Low German "rive" meaning â€˜profligateâ€™, â€˜generousâ€™.

"Oldt" is North German and is a variant of Alt which is German and Jewish: from alt â€˜oldâ€™, typically applied as a distinguishing epithet to the older of two bearers of the same personal name.
