Goose or Gwilt?

Post: # 740260Post sainter2631 »

Same old debate but after the way Gwilt performed tonight I think Goose should definately come in.

People will no doubt defend Gwilt's performance tonight (as they did last week), but he was definately very average and one of our worst. He made costly mistakes, seemed to get out-marked on every 1 on 1, turned the ball over, wouldn't go after the opposition man who had the ball (even if they were in his immediate area) and he didn't stick with his man (who was McPhee for half the night) in crucial times.

Maguire having yet another 5 goal BOG game at Sandy- surely we should bring him in for a game to see where he's at (which also allows Gwilt to go back to the 2nds and try and get back the form he had during the beginning rounds of the year).

Even if its not Maguire they bring in, Gwilt should definately not be keeping a spot in the side when we have quality players waiting and pushing to be selected.

Goose without a doubt, Gwilt was average this week and Goose deserves the call up.

Try going to a game rather than watching on the TV. Gwilt one of our better players today and easily his best game for the club.

Actually I was at the game tonight and was sitting fairly close to the front on Level 1- so I saw the game perfectly fine. And what I saw was not his best game for the club but rather a woeful effort. Granted he dug his feet in during the last 10 minutes when the game could have been snatched away from us, but before that he didn't do a lot worth mentioning. He got 13 disposals and for someone who sat in the foward line most of the night, his only shot on goal was about 10 metres out and he hit the post (angle was difficult, but the fact is he didnt contribute significantly to our score). So I'm not sure what game you were watching, but from where I was, and from hearing similiar comments from the St Kilda supporters surrounding me, he didn't do so great.

Well, if supporters around you were saying it, that's a super compelling argument....our supporters would never be critical without a reason

If that was Gwilt's best game for the club he's in a lot of trouble. For mine he's not strong enough in the air for a "marking" forward, doesn't apply enough pressure once the ball hits the deck and makes poor/slow decisions on the rare occasions he does find the football.

I genuinely fail to see what Gwilt offers and cannot see how he can continue to hold his place in the side.

Give the guy a break. How is he is expected to make an impact when half the time he is asked to take the opposing sides (hate to use the term but it fits) quarterback deep into our goal square. It's been said before but if he has not been doing his role Ross would drop him.

Gwilt took a few marks and wasn't bad.
Milne, Gram, Goddard even Gilbert all played their worst game of the season. But we won.

Was simply pointing out that for a man apparently playing his "best" game for the club, he certainly wasn't getting any love from the fans who were obviously watching the same game I was.

I don't think that Gwilt is a horrible player and that he is the weaklink in the side- I am simply saying that from his performance tonight he may benefit from a stint in the 2nds which would allow him to fight back into the side and find some form- which is made easier while there are a large group of high quality players pushing for selection.

Gwilt did ok tonight. Obviously didnt see the Sandy game but Goose must have done well. It will be a close call but RL seems consistant and doesnt seem to make changes unless he has too. To me it will again be no change barring injury.

Too different types of players and the forward line will be TOO slow with Kosi , Roo and Maguire in it. ALA when they tried Gerhig with Kosi and Roo.

Gwilt was just ok, although a really good spoil on the wing which lead to Dal gettingthe ball to roo for the sealer.

I would think Raph would be a more like for like with Gwilt.

I thnk peoples love affair with maguire clouds their logic

Though Milne lacked substance on the scoreboard and probably he did play his worst game for the year, he actually pushed up the ground well and found that ball that way- which is something he never would have done back in 2006/2007. He has improved extensively since then and even though he didn't kick a bag of 3+, he still did okay. Plus we all know that he is quite erratic and will bounce back and kick 3+ sometime in the coming weeks.

Gwilt has been pretty good.
But I still worry about his decision making
... and his disposal
... and at times he looks like he isn't 100% committed

Goose was a champion.
Would love to ease him back in that side and get some games under his belt.

If we are going to make an impact in September then a fit and in form Maguire will be worth more to us than Gwilt.
We have 5 relatively easy games coming up - would be the obvious time to give him some game time.

And, but luck for Gwilt, but he seems the obvious one to make way.

Gwilt was lively in the first half and in my calculations had 2 or 3 goal assists, In the second half when we were struggling he constantly ran hard into space to be an option and either held marks or caused a stoppage to allow us to set up again. I also thought his preassure and tackling was equal to any other forward today.

I stand by my assesment of his game. I have questioned his selection at times also but on this weeks form I would be staggered if he was considered for omission.

Yeah but it was crap win.....Essendon won the last 3 quarters, can't compare to the other 7 wins.....question is, was it the 6 day break that farked us up, or were we complacent?

We won. We didnt play well but Jimmy did better than at least 6 to 8 others. Doubt he will go next week.

Aside from the Gwilt issue but still on the Goose, does anyone know his stats from today etc. Are they posted somewhere. Goose is one of my favourites and I would love to see him come in, hes also in my DT and I need a backman badly.

Didn't Gwilt make the play of the day when he broke two tackles and made the pass for a goal? Quality at times when needed! Keep him in.

I thought Gwilt played fairly well.

We did fall down with our forward defensive effort, but this was not Gwilt, it was Milne and Schnieder.

Milne's game was a shocker except for one strong mark.

His goal came at Gwilt's expense, grabbed right on the line as it was bouncing thru.

Milne's defensive game was absent, his kicks he got were ordinary as he tried to pass around corners and missed targets costing us goals at the other end.

A throw back to the type of game which typifies why I have a history of questioning his value to the team.

And Schnieder was equally in-effective resulting in Riewoldt and Koshitzke to do the chasing after the ball was spilt from marking contests they contested.

It was interesting that Essendon reverted to the tactic which has seen Milne so ineffective and so hurtful (to St Kilda) in the past, they parked bigger bodies on both Milne and Schnieder - and both those defenders were just as quick Milne and Schnieder.

Gwilt was far better than either Milne or Schnieder tonight.

And I thought Gardiner was again supurb.
