An interesting fact about Grant Thomas and Ross Lyon
Ross Lyon's league debut was in Round 18 1985 for Fitzroy against Collingwood. This was the week after Grant Thomas's last game for Fitzroy against Hawthorn.
So Thomas has twice been dumped for Lyon.
And furthermore, the man who got 2 Brownlow votes in Lyon's debut: Matt Rendell.

The 1985 team included: Walls coach, Rendall, GT, Paul Roos, RL, Mick Nettlefold, Tim Pekin & Mark Scott.Iceman234 wrote:But Con, when you played footy did the fact that you may not have played an actual game at the same level as someone else make you feel like you "didn't play footy with them"?
I'm sure they trained together a hell of a lot and felt part of the same team.
Its had and still has a fair bit of direct and indirect influence over the Saints.
But more importantly for SS was a key Roys supporter at the time ... Teflon .

Lol I didn't know that about Lawrence. Life is very weird how it turns out.kosifantutti23 wrote:This is weird.
Ross played his last game in round 2 1995 for the Bears.
He must have been injured rather than dropped because he got a lot of the ball and got a Brownlow vote.
Brisbane brought in a first gamer to replace him.
His name was Steven Lawrence

Ross did his knee and was only 28 at the time. Back then the medical advice was that he shouldn't play on, so he retired.Shaggy wrote:Lol I didn't know that about Lawrence. Life is very weird how it turns out.kosifantutti23 wrote:This is weird.

A pity because he could have had a few really good years, being at the peak of his career.

I did know RL retired pre-maturely due to injury. I saw him many times ... very good footballer. Life's not fair but RL moved on and has probably done better than he ever could have dreamed of ... up until we win the flag this year and then he will be in heaven .Legendary wrote:Ross did his knee and was only 28 at the time. If he didn't do his leg he may not be our coach now and our blokes may still be underperforming. Life is all about accidents.

Just to keep this going, does anyone know if any players made their debut the week after Lawrence played his last game for St Kilda?

But then again, think of who was the man who decided that was Lawrence's last game - Grant Thomas.
So in that sense, the wheel turned full circle.

Does anybody know when RB came to the Saints? I note on wiki that they talk about the late 1970s where he met GT there when they both played in the reserves. I wonder if they were both there in 1976 when Barry Lawrence, Steven's dad played his last season for us?B W and R all over wrote:Just looked over the books and I don't think so.battye wrote:But more importantly, how many degrees from the Don?kosifantutti23 wrote:This is weird.
