5. Michael Gardiner - slightly loopy
6. Nick Riewoldt - one mark exemplifies

10. Justin Koschitzke - Very brave eyes on the ball player
11. David Armitage - has a nasty streak
12. Andrew McQualter - a fierce competitor
13. Steven King - huge leader
14. Robert Eddy - eyes on the pill, and works hard.

Back in '05, there was a huge article about us in the herald sun, saying we were soft as butter.

Think we went out and won the next 6 or 7 in a row after that.

Um, it was only six months ago that the hawks and cats showed they were way out front of us in hardness.

Let's see how we handle these guys (and an experienced Eagles mob with 13 or so premiership players this week)

Tackle very well but it's a very long season as we all know too well

Was it only hardness that beat us???
OK.....I thought there was more to it......

I would back the saints to match it physically with any team - man for man we stack up against Hawthorn and Geelong......however, I wish we could use the ball as well as them....

I would like to know who you think is tougher????

and why....

The cats showed their toughness last year when challenged in the GF......a lot of good players geelong......tough....who???

The hawks have some tough puppies....mixed with some cats (Ladson, Ellis, Birchill, Young).....they can be exposed...

Nope. I think the Cats, Hawks, and a couple of others are harder and tougher. We've been exposed many times for lack of physicallity, and seem to make a habit of only playing tough against the lesser hardened teams. When we match it with the likes of Hawthorn we've come of age. Until then, no...in a nutshell.

Like Round 16 last year????

What makes Hawthorn Tough - because they win????

or do they win because they have a good team....and they have the best fwd duo since Riewoldt Gehrig 2004/5.....or they had an advanced game plan which FEW teams had answers for.....

How tough are Ellis, Birchall, Young, Ladson?????
some of the bigger skirts in the AFL......

Geelong - tough or just mature bodies....lots of players in the 22-30yo age bracket

Personally I believe Sydney are the toughest outfit in the AFL......a stoppage team that applies pressure as a part of its Game Plan.....Bolton and Kirk are bulldozers and they are built on character and spirit.....

They have been successful on the back of very few champions and many GOP's......but a consistent effort across the board.....plus, you cannot be successful on a small ground if you do not play good contested footy...

teams that are tough don't need to reason with themselves as to why they are

a tough individual is a reasonable individual.

Have you ever agreed with anyone and/or so much as uttered the word yes ? :)

I reckon we're looking a pretty hard mob after two rounds. But I think there's little doubt the team that holds the cup aloft after 22 rounds and three or so finals is the toughest. Stating the obvious, I suppose.

Mind you I did like RL's little post match chat to the team during that 'insider special' during last week's telecast. What did he say? Something along the lines of 'Don't do the hard team stuff and it's simple, boys, your place in the side is at risk.' Not sure there's anything new in what he's saying, but I do like the fact that there's an apparent benchmark for expected effort.

BTW, what was that story about Armo having half his face ripped off in a juniors game? Does that ring a bell with anyone?

Hawthorn and Geelong are the two toughest and meanest clubs goings around.

Campbell Brown, Luke Hodge, Jordan Lewis, Brad Sewell but those players aside, the Hawks are just just a big-bodied side.

Chapman, Scarlett, Hunt, Milburn, Mooney, Max Rooke are Geelong's enforcers, they would eat their young, and they too are a naturally big-bodied side. Also, Joel Selwood's one of the toughest going around.

As for most-disciplined, after the first two weeks you could definitely make a case for us.

I think port adelaide are a bit of a knuckle head unit and thats why we have trouble with them.

They out muscled us when we where a young team and have left a few mental scars- they would not have got into a premiership if they had not exposed some of our young guys to some physical pressure.

That was along time ago and we are mature bodied now.

Carlton will probably experience something similar as teams rough up the young guys.

Hawthorn limit their exposure to roughing up by playing as a unit and thats what the saints and swans also do -not tough but tough to play against.

I hope we do to Carlton what Brisbane did to us.

I'm looking forward to Carlton's comeuppance.

I dont agree.

GAJ is tougher than Selwood, why?
Because GAJ doesn't get hit. GAJ doesnt run around with a target on his back.

If Selwood gets railed again this w/end against Collingwood (which Collingwood will undoubtedly attempt) it may be a stint on the sideline for J. Selwood with a bleed.

Tough is putting your body and head in places not many people dare to go. That's why the likes of Luke Ball and Joel Selwood get it, because they don't think about where they're going or the ramifications of going there, they just want the footy.

They're tough. Make no mistake.

Clinton Young from Hawthorn never gets hit either, does that make him tough? Strange rationale.

Depends on how you define toughness?

*Courageous footy
*Unsociable footy
*Being generally buffed

toughness is resilience and an ability to endure. it has nothing to do with football.

But the post raised the question 'is St Kilda the toughest team in the AFL' so for the purposes of the post toughness DOES have everything to do with football doesn't it?
