Our Pokie Revenue
Has this been talked about on here yet??
In The Age, our club's pokie revenue for the past 3 years was only above pathetic Arden Street North Melbourne's lousy effort.
We turned over about $11 million, compared to most Vic club's $20+ million efforts.
About a third of revenue translates to profit to the club.
Obviously, the location of our club's pokies in relatively wealthy Moorabbin, plus the crappy condition of the club/stands/area doesn't help at all.
If we want to make some decent pokie revenue, we need to move our revenue base to a poorer area, in a decent, busy location, with good facilities.
Thoughts?

Someone at the club should have a chat to the kingston city council about this idea, i reckon they'd go for it... they may even let us build a new facility on South Rd to house it in...
edit: on a serious note, there is little chance we'd 'do a hawthorn' and leach off the outter suburbs. Frankston City Council eliminated any possibility of us doing this when we moved there IIRC.

Missed a golden opportunity when we turned down Casey Fields. It came with a permit for about 80 machines.luckysaint wrote:Someone at the club should have a chat to the kingston city council about this idea, i reckon they'd go for it... they may even let us build a new facility on South Rd to house it in...

hmmm, interesting point Grumps, whilst I don't like Casey Fields as a training base (too far out), it's a poorer/developing area and much better revenue source for pokies than Moorabbin without much doubt IMO!GrumpyOne wrote:Missed a golden opportunity when we turned down Casey Fields. Apart from the ethical issues of deliberately targeting low-income areas for pokie revenue (Do "poorer" people have less taste in entertainment?? ) I reckon hanging your revenue hat on pokies in any area is risky in the new economic age we are in. The main problem with our pokie venue is that theres NOTHING else to do except play pokies and drink a limited range of drinks Nowhere to eat, nowhere to take a break, sit and watch sport on a decent sized TV. God if I was a pokie player Moorbabin would be right on the tail-end of the list of my fave playing Venues. It wont make one red cent more than it is now staying in its present locationsaintspremiers wrote:hmmm, interesting point Grumps, whilst I don't like Casey Fields as a training base (too far out), it's a poorer/developing area and much better revenue source for pokies than Moorabbin without much doubt IMO!GrumpyOne wrote:Missed a golden opportunity when we turned down Casey Fields. Quite possibly, also more greed for the "big win".saint66au wrote:Apart from the ethical issues of deliberately targeting low-income areas for pokie revenue (Do "poorer" people have less taste in entertainment?? )
McDonalds (for example) has higher prices in somewhere like Cranbourne, than they would in Toorak (if there is even a McD there).

Yeah, that sounds about right.
It's all about disposable income, and how people perceive themselves in society. For example, on average, the person in Toorak earns more than a person living in say, Broadmeadows.
People generally like to buy themselves the best things that they can afford for themselves and their family. Thus, those living in Toorak (as an example), would have higher propensity to dine at more exclusive restaurants, as they have more disposable income, and are willing to part with it as they see it as a status symbol of their wealth.

Do "poorer" people have less taste in entertainment?? [/quote]
Not an issue of entertainment, but an issue of stupidy.
Stupid people squander their money down pokies and on the GG's. They booze at the pub every week night and chain smoke fags.
Have no initiate and expect others to support them.
No wonder they remain poor.

How dumb is to have only one social club.
Many St Kilda supporters don't go near the social club at Moorabbin simply because it so far from where they live.
St Kilda should have social club venues in all its major supporter areas which are then regularly frequented by the players.
They should have as a minimum an extra one in the area of Jihad Stadium for after the game, one in St Kilda and another in the Seaford area.

And where exactly would all our major supporter areas be?ace wrote:How dumb is to have only one social club.

There is one at Docklands, It's called the Victory Room and is open to Social Club Members and their guests at every home game.
But if you're talking pokies, there is no way of getting them in the Docklands area and the City of Frankston won't allow any down there.

Good arguments here......all good points.
What we need is a REAL RSL-type club, the type they have in NSW and QLD......they are gradually springing up around Victoria also...basically, you need play areas for kids, several bars, a TAB outlet, plus the horrible (but necessary) pokies.
It's got to be an "entertainment" venue (not my kind, but it is for many), so it appeals to all ages. A modern venue, purpose built.
Perhaps this is what the grand plan for our Social Club on South Road was, but again it would have been a disaster - wrong suburb!
I suspect the Hawks pokie venue out near Waverely Park is something similar - has anyone been to it and can confirm???
I wonder if Westaway and FF with their "wowsers" on the board (according to some...) are doing all they can to change the current state of play???

It is a pretty shoddy way of making money.
Ripping off losers who are too stupid to know better.
But you can't blame the clubs for looking at these revenue streams.
They have to survive.
So whilst the moralists may interpret our miserable $3m compared to Collingwood's $20m, as implying we are the "good-guys", they also imply that previous administrations of this club have let a golden opportunity to lock in a $10m per annum revenue stream slip by via poor management.

The rest of Australia can wander mask-free, socialise, eat out, no curfews, no zoning, no police rings of steel, no illogical inconsistent rules.

The Hawks venue at Waverley Gardens is a pokie bar. Hardly family friendly or an entertainment venue.saintspremiers wrote:Good arguments here......all good points.
