Fame never stops for Winmar

* Tim Clarke
* March 10, 2009

He is already the subject of one of the most infamous and influential pictures ever taken at an AFL game.

And tonight for St Kilda, Western Bulldogs and South Fremantle star Nicky Winmar will add to his footballing legacy when he becomes one of nine retired greats inducted into the West Australian Football Hall of Fame.

Despite 317 senior games, 425 goals, two All-Australian guernseys, two St Kilda best and fairests and being the first indigenous player to reach the 200 game milestone, Winmar will always be best remembered for his gesture towards Collingwood fans racially taunting him at the end of a game at Victoria Park in 1993,

Having turned to face the offending segments of the crowd, Winmar lifted his guernsey and defiantly pointed to his skin.

The resultant image captured by Age photographer Wayne Ludbey captured Winmar's defiance so well it is now acknowledged as one of the main turning points in indigenous footballers taking a stance and refusing to accept racial abuse.

Joining Winmar in the Hall of Fame at the gala event at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre will be Charles Dick Sweetman, who played 215 games for East Fremantle at the turn of the last century, and Dave Woods, who played 197 games for East Fremantle and 13 for his state between 1923-1935.

One hall of fame member will also be elevated to Legend status on the night, joining the likes of Barry Cable, Graham 'Polly' Farmer, John Todd and Bill Walker as Legends of West Australian football.

He's a champion. I used to watch games just to see Nicky and Plugger.

My fondest memory of nicky was when he was a young fella at south fremantle playing at subiaco oval.

the details are a bit sketchy but from memory the ball bounced over the line with nicky in hot pursuit, the ball bounced back off the fence and being a little bit frustrated he teed off and launched the ball straight between the eyes of a front row spectator, priceless memories..

Same here. Absolutely love this guy and gave me my most cherished memories of football and still carry a bitterness about his ending.

Know exactly what your saying Im as straight as it gets (I think) but watching the way he moved with such grace right down to the way he placed the ball to boot almost used to give me a hard on. :lol:
