Measuring the World's Greatest Kicks

Post: # 707713Post Shades »

While playing for the St. Kilda Saints on April 11, 1981, Australian Rules football player Jeff Fehring sealed his place in history with what was arguably the greatest kick ever in professional sports. According to the Australian Football League, his wind-aided boot sailed over the opposing Collingwood Magpies for an estimated 98 yards before bouncing through the goal posts.

I wasn't there that day... but when I saw it on the telly, I was absolutely amazed. Absolutely unforgettable! And to think a Sainter did it! Go Saints!

noted that three of the four kicks were done by players playing in teams with simiiar nicknames
two from saints and one from Christians :)

Crowd went beserk !
(But we still got thrashed).

In terms of long kicks our own ToTC Legend Dave McNamara is credited with a place kick that was estimated at a couple of yards short of 100 yards.

Hardly a thrashing especially by our 1980's standards.

I think the Fehring goal gave us a sniff in the last quarter.

The stats never lie.
But my recollection was that we were never a serious chance of winning after half time.
Still it was one of the all-time highlights.

Very sad about his demise.
Tough life out in the bush to hold together a farm and a family in a drought.

He had a publicity stunt "kick off" against the two rugby code's biggest names at the time (Churchill and someone?) - duly smashed them. Would have been a signt to behold in the place kick era! Apparently, when he was 60, he could still high kick to the top of his door frame! Amazing.
