G Ablett snr was a thug in general and especially in that 91 final.
We were the better team until he knocked out 2 of our best players.
I never rated G Ablett senior as a superstar footballer... never saw him play a good game against us.
Frawley beat him comprehensively every time, except for one game when Frawley had a groin problem, couldnt move freely and I think Ablett kicked 5 goals by default - anyone would have that day.
Ablett averaged 1 goal as a forward against St kilda - probably from a free kick in the goal square.

97 because we thought we were going to win.
It was particularly hard in the days and months (and years) afterwards as we tried to come to grips with it.
But 71 was also a shocker as we thought we almost had it - 22 points was a big margin in those days with half an hour to play.
The feeling in that last quarter was indescribably bad as our lead slowly evaporated. It was like watching an accident happen. An indescribably bad frustrating feeling.
Felt like someone was draining out all your blood till by the end of the match you were numb and lifeless.

The rest of Australia can wander mask-free, socialise, eat out, no curfews, no zoning, no police rings of steel, no illogical inconsistent rules.

Yep...a rainy day at Waverley with a gale blowing to one end...and we wont the toss and kicked AGAINST IT. Battled manfully to stay with them in the 1st quarter then fiddled around with posession footy in the 2nd quarter and totally wasted the gale..probably the worst game Ive seen R Harvey play. Footscray then came out after 1/2 time, kicked long with the wind and that was the end of thatmbogo wrote:Funny that no one mentioned the semi V Footscray in 92 - we were virtual flag faves after doing a great job on Collingwood the week before in QF .
Young Grant did over our D Grant ... kicked a few in the last to snatch it I think - season lost.
Noone picked them either.

It didnt help when Plugger nearly knocked himself out when he took a screamer over Hawkins in the goal square just before quarter time.saint66au wrote:Yep...a rainy day at Waverley with a gale blowing to one end...and we wont the toss and kicked AGAINST IT. The one thing we werent though is flag favourites even though we beat the pies as we did finish sixth. Dogs were even favourite for that game.
don't talk to me about that game.......fell over n the carpark before the game started....covered in mud with a wet bum...had a seat behind the goals at the far end of the ground in amongst hard arsed doggie supporters.... couldn't work out why they were befriending me .... but nearly got in a fight all the same.....after i told the turkeys they would get done the next week...which they were.......got home to discover the ponchos we had purchased at the ground in a hurry when the rain came down ...had doggie colours on the back.....geez was i pissed....saint66au wrote:Yep...a rainy day at Waverley with a gale blowing to one end...and we wont the toss and kicked AGAINST IT. 2005 prelim against port which I still believe we would have won without the ground invasion during our great runon at the start of the 1 st quarter...Port regrouped after the enforced time out and got back into the game [/quote]
Betrayed by idiots among our own supporters.
They should have been made to become Collingwood supporters for 3 years as a penance.
