BJ, The importance of his season.
Hey Folks,
Would love to see some photos of BJ, how ripped is at the moment? Has always been carrying a bit of fat which has disappointed me as it costs him pure strength and speed. I want him to be super strong for his weight class.
If he steps into the midfield and kicks 30 - 50 goals and get 100 assists then we're sure fire favourites.
In my opinion the most important player in our team for 2009.
Carn BJ.

Sam Gilbert you are an EXCITEMENT MACHINE!
interestingly he lead all the time trials on monday so that is a very good sign.
Showed in the finals that he can play on ball and needs to start making a mark on this comp. Has all the skills to be a top 10 AFL player

i strongly believe how we release our better players to begin run and carry into space will define how well we go
we have one of the best back 6's in the league...our run and carry and space creation was a good facet of our latter 2008 play
the bottom 6 have to work their asses off to get the top 6 players free
its gotten to a stage where its obvious dal santo doesnt have the best defensive pressure skills...oh well...
get the poor boy free...we will get many goals a season out of his talents yet him applying pressure ala cj isnt going to essentially do squat
he just isnt a defensive player
off the beaten track here

that would mean bj is directly involved or responsible for 4-6 goals per game
wont happen
god i feel like everyone is pushing him into god-like-reiwoldt-harvey untouchable status already

although he is capable of it, i dont think he is there yetSaints Premiers 2008 wrote:re-reading that its a bit far-fetchedn1ck wrote:Would have thought that most teams who have a midfielder who will kick 30-50 goals, and give off 100 assists a seasons would be a pretty fair crack at the flag...

he is my favourite player and one that is super important to the saints. This will be the first time that he doesnt have to play off the back line and now can use his precise kicking to set up goals
if he kicks 1.5 a game, i can see him getting 4 assists a game
that is a hand in 5-6 goals a game and one that he is capable of, if he gets 15 possessions forward of half way he will have his hand in 6 goals a game, if he doesn't then he wont get his hand in 6 goals a game
i cant wait to see how he goes this year

Re: BJ, The importance of his season.
the only way he'll kick 30-50 is if he's used mainly as a forward.karnak wrote:If he steps into the midfield and kicks 30 - 50 goals and get 100 assists then we're sure fire favourites.
i'd have liked to have seen him tried at ff or chf, but so many have him pencilled in as a gun midfielder that i think it unlikely.
that's okay, so long as somewhere on our list we can find a CLASS leading/marking target to take some heat off riewoldt. though i think bj could do it better, there are other candidates.
it's something we must do to have any chance of matching the big boys like hawthorn in terms of firepower, imo.

I know what Karnak means about carrying fat
BJ and Maguire in the one pre season both got up to 96kg, Maguire's was a leaner muscle, BJ never looked big and strong he just looked like a big body
He has shredded some kg's and now looks a bit muscleyer, but at one point in his career he was carrying too much weight for his body...
he is at a good weight, he reads the play well, he loves the club and loves the players, he is a born champion and cant wait when he wins the brownlow
why cant a midfielder kick 30-50 goals?
If you run your arse off and you mark the ball anywhere from the 60m have a crack!! BJ can~

If we had a fully fit backline (Gram, Max, Chips, Maguire) plus one of Ray, Begley or L Fisher to be a running back, we could have the luxury of pushing Goddard into a midfield/forward role.
Imagine it...passes actually hitting Riewoldt on the chest.
Perhaps when/if Dal Santo struggles, I'd switch the two of them. Get Dal behind the ball (I'd rather him in the midfield but he's not firing there, switch him back) and move Goddard up the park.
Different players, yes, but you're not losing anything by way of skill, which is crucial and so often happens when we take NDS from the midfield.

Clueless and mediocre petty tyrant.
Just name any midfielder who can kick up to 50 goals in a year. If we get 20-25 out of him it would be a great year. No wonder people get disappointed with our players if we expect that in a year.karnak wrote:he will kick 30 - 50 as a midfielder this year.

he will set up those that he gets from direct clearances.

Plugger has a point there most midfielder average around 25-28 goals per yearplugger66 wrote:Just name any midfielder who can kick up to 50 goals in a year. If we get 20-25 out of him it would be a great year.karnak wrote:he will kick 30 - 50 as a midfielder this year.

The importance of BJ having a good year is crucial from many angles. If he can start the year at warp speed he'll attract attention from the opposition which can only help those with the heavy tag.
BJ doesn't seem to get much attention from media or opposition - he could go into 09 very underrated. If anything they get stuck into him when he cracks the sh*ts (opposition players, not media). His passion is great but he just needs to keep it in check, take it out on them by kicking their buts from a footy perspective.
He probably has the most upside of any player in our team at present because it hasn't all come together for him yet.
In the early days he was described as slow and awkward but he's body and brain are maturing and in 08 not only did he recover from knee surgery in an impressive way but he began to put it all together - 09 bring it on.

I've never seen a bad St.Kilda player - that's just how they are.

give me stats that most midfielers score 25-28 goals per year
hell if we get roo to kick 50, milne 50, kosi 40 and two mids to kick 30 we will be doing swimmingly (if the other 17 per week arent going to badly)
