Training Today Wed 10th December
Went down to Moorabbin today. Stayed for the first hour. Pretty basic preseason fitness training with fitness the main aim,not too much ball work (match day simulation)
Notes :
1. Maguire, Goddard, Baker, Begley,Connors, Rhys Stanley, Blake McGrath and Paul Cahill trained away from the main group. Jack Steven ran laps. Maguire looked like Superman boxing with his top off. He and Goddard mainly did boxing.
2. Did not see Michael Gardener at training.
3. Did see Jack Barker on the bench - all new players introduced themselves to him which was great to see.
4. Main group trained enthusiastically with Sam Fisher looking alot bigger and Riewoldt looking as cut as ever.
5. Irishman Tommy Walsh trained on his own with fitness staff analysing his endurance. He looked good. About 190cm and 95kg but quick and evasive. If he tackled you it would hurt ! He is a big lad at 19 years old.
6. Maguire did no running but did look like an Olympic swimmer he was that fit. Hope his foot can stay together and he can get back on the park next year.

Lets give homework the benifit of the doubt here. He is only 14 years old and lives in Echuca, so he may not know too much about the history of the club or the legends that we have produced over the years.saintdooley wrote:very stupid and offensive post.homework wrote:Who is Jack Barker
I don't have the time right now to do justice to Trevor or Jack, but someone might be able to offer up a bit of a history lesson for homework !!

Thank you Eastern.
I completely agree, how about instead of shutting the guy down you try and inform him about the great man and his son. Seriously, how many of you were born with the innate knowledge of St Kilda's history, I would be willing to bet some of you had to 'learn' atleast some of it...

Trevor Barker
Trevor Barker (7 October 1956 – April 1996) was a former Australian rules footballer with St. Kilda Football Club.
Recruited From Cheltenham Football Club in 1975. He was also a handy cricketer, winning an under 16 premiership with his father Jack coaching. Cheltenham Cricket Club, Cheltenham Football Club
He had a distinguished career and was considered the Saints' best player throughout the 1980s, in a decade where the team had very little success. In fact, his 230 games did not include any finals appearances, a VFL/AFL record. He was an inspirational footballer known for his spectacular marking and contribution to the club, particularly in the 1980s when the club had severe financial difficulties.
Barker was frequently mentioned in Matthew Hardy's book Saturday Afternoon Fever. Barker died of bowel cancer, aged 39, in April 1996.
The Trevor Barker Award, given to St Kilda's Best and Fairest player, was named in his honour.
The Trevor Barker Beach Oval, home of the Sandringham Football Club was also named in his honour.
Also If you are down this way, melbourne area, Pop into the cheltenham cemetary and pay your respects to a great man of the stkilda football club!

Homey, for your future reference:
The club champion or Best & Fairest award at St Kilda is named after Trevor Barker who played over 200 games for the Saints. Trevor played when we were crap and he literally played for St Kilda for nothing. Simply played for us because he loved St Kilda, barracked for us all his life. He played for around 15 years without one single finals appearance!! When he retired, he coached the Sandringham football club to successive VFA/VFL premierships and became assistant coach at St Kilda. He was our next coach in the making - sadly he got cancer and passed away still only a young man with so much to offer. He is a club legend due to his courage, loyalty and sacrifice. He will always be the most courageous footballer I have ever seen. A true champion. His father is Jack Barker a legendary footballer in his own right and a wonderful, decent man who loves the Saints and always will. He is an icon at Moorabbin. We all love Jack for who he is (a great bloke) but also for giving us his son Trevor.

I want to stand for something. I'm a loyal person and I think at the end of my career it will be great to look back and know that I'm a St Kilda person for life.

A great story about Trevor was the time when he won the club best and fairest when we were struggling financially... The prize was a new car (which was a pretty decent prize back in those days considering they were basically amatures and had to have full time jobs), well anyway after winning the car, Trevor donated it back to the club to help them pay some bills...
That was the sort of guy he was, a great player and a great guy, Trevor and Harvey are the reasons why our club is so great despite the lack of onfield success, they are the epitome of 'Strength Through Loyalty'!!

But given it's mid-December there isn't much to report.
The mere fact that Jack made it to training IMO was the most significant aspect of the morning.
....and that Begley's nickname may well be "Irish" !!!
i am Melbourne Skies - sometimes Blue Skies, Grey Skies, even Partly Cloudy Skies.
I agree there wasn't a great deal to report from training - it was just a preseason fittness session really. Although having Jack Barker there sitting on the bench WAS the news of the day. Hopefully all the young Saints fans know who he is now.
Further training news :
Brad Howard was training and looks to be alot bigger across the shoulders. He will be a rookie at best as he has been delisted off the main list, so won't be able to play a senior game unless elevated during year.
I think the main issue with the Saints at this time of the year is that all players except Dempster (ACL) are on the track and training. This is a geat sign. Only player in cotton wool so to speak is Maguire. Baker looked like he needs the run but he would not have done alot of running in the last 6 months. Baker Lyon has stated will play "the whole season" and Maguire "alot of football".
