Recognised Ruck coaches obviously hard to find. Reputations for ruck coaching put Maddern and Sam Newman at the top of the coaching tree based on their work with other AFL Clubs. Apart from the names already mentioned the only other ones that come to my mind are
Paul Salmon
Damian Monkhorst (had a previous stint with the Saints before returning to local coaching)
Luke Darcy
It is interesting to note that H'thorn have appointed a couple of Assistants straight from the SAFL obviously based on the senior coach's knowledge of good people working there. I think Blight did the same thing with Jonas when at StK. I think Jonas is now back at Adelaide after a few seasons with Sydney. Perhaps we should be looking a bit wider than direct AFL experience. Aren't we still looking for a midfield coach to replace Anthony Rock also?

I know many are upset with his departure particularly with the club he selected but I thought it was better for his development as a coach to go and have a look at another club or two before he returns to the Saints

Good point. You don't have to be a good player to be a good coach IMO.

Let us consider where our assistants have gone.

Rock... back to North.

Madden...back to the Dons.

and our former forward coach Barker...back to the Hawks.

Now there might be a common thread there  , but it is not about Lyon being someone who cannot be worked with.

Peter Jonas is still listed on the Crow's site as on of their FIVE Ass't coaches.

I reckon Peter might be happy to hear that.

Even he was dead, we should have recruited him to add some personality to the coaches box.

Rumours of the death of Peter Jonas have been greatly exaggerated. Good bloke Jona and alive and kicking at the Crows.

Hmmm...I heard he sold his soul to the devil and got a second chance. His pennance...he has to live in Adelaide and coach the Crows!

If we are looking for a new ruck coach, then surely we should be having a talk to Grant Thomas, he would be fantastic in the role!

I would have thought it to be a legitimate question.

So I ask again - do we actually need a ruck coach?

In my limited experience where ass't coaches have specialist roles in the training etc of the team two things seem to happen. The first is it takes some of the pressure off the senior coach ie the coach knows what he wants but it is impossible to do everything to prepare the team and they have to have good people around them to do the detailed work. The second thing that happens seems to be that it gives the players in the group eg mid field, defence confidence in that they know someone is looking after their detailed training and closely watching how its put into practice on match day. The players know that they can talk with someone who has detailed understanding of their efforts other than the senior coach can't watch everything. If these observations are based on an involvement in a strong local competition it would probably be 50 times greater in AFL. I reckon we need a ruck coach.

Gawd you're pesky...you chase Rodge through every single thread. Not that I'm his best mate...I've seen him write some s***, he's probablt seen me write some s*** too, but hassling other forumites on every single post is poor form. Now someone get the Pea Beau.
