Hey Stinger...

Next time you catch up with Cowboy, get him to explain this....

The date was the last training before the 1971 Grand Final....

I went to the ground to watch them train and I was standing near the goals at the City end...

Cowboy was doing warm up laps with another player (can't remember)....

as he jog past me, he said to that other player...

I can't wait to the end of this farking season

My favourite has to be Joffa Cunningham.

Was never blessed with silky skills, but he tried and tried for us in those dark days. He played well above his talent level.

my gut churns thinking of 97;
2009 was agony,
2010a was a pleasure to watch only to be devastated by 2010 b.

True, not fair to say he alone cost us the game though. Still liked him though.

Agree with Brett Voss, loved the bloke

i think the coach decided that he would never play in the red white and black again after that day....

Max is a champion defender.

also, no way is maxy or was david grant a GOP.

max has been one of the best defenders in the comp over many years; grant was very talented and always a top 5 or top 10 player for us.

Apologies for missing it!

I really did have a soft spot for Troy Schwarze.

I'd say Luke Ball is my current fav GOP.

Sheesh, I don't think you can be a GOP and make All-Australian.

Favourite GOP...

I'll take Brett Voss any day of the week.
Didn't realise David Grant made AA. I just remember how under-rated he was at a time when the football world gushed over blokes like Silvagni and Kernahan. He was a terrific player and remains one of my favourites.

So why didn't the coach move him in the last quarter?

Eljay Connors, I know he hasn't played a game but I have a real soft spot for him :)
I will be very happy when (& if) he plays his first game.

good question...but i don't know the answer.......guess that's why the coach isn't a coach anymore........

i guess it all depends on your definition of a GOP.

some consider it anyone who is not an out-and-out champion of the competition.

i define it as someone who has had to get the best out of his natural talent to hold down a regular senior spot.

In recent years I loved the way Andrew Thompson played, never shirked a contest and went in hard. I don't know if Rod Keough qualifies but I loved watching him play.

I certainly don't.

I define it as someone who plays at a good to ordinary level the majority of the time.

Jasan Gram> Plays well from time to time, plays ordinary from time to time.

GOP.

Stevie Baker> Plays good from time to time, plays ordinary from time to time.

GOP.

Lenny Hayes> Plays excellent from time to time, plays great from time to time, plays good from time to time, hardly ever plays ordinary.

Not a GOP.

Andrew Thompson for me.
You could really see by the way he went about it that he was picked up when he was in his twenties and he did not take any game he played at AFL level for granted.

i rated Jason Cripps

Loved that game where he came back as we had too many injuries and he hadnt played for 2 years

came back and got best on ground and 32 possessions in a win where we hadnt won many for the year
