anyone read Tim Lanes article
found it a strange strange article....
was about the decision from the ICC re: pakistan walking off.... the fact that they changed the result later on. The MCC came out last week and said they do not recognise this change because there is a rule that once the umpires have declared the result, it stands... most fans approve of this/....
lane then went on to talk about how the AFL changed the saints freo game. This is despite the fact that the result is only over when the umpire HEARS the siren. Thus he admitted that they actually broke their own rules .....
is this the first time anyone has admitted that the rules were broken in changing the result? Another thing that was interesting was Lanes reasoning that people are against the cricket decision because they saw a interest group getting their way..... yet he argued that this did not happen in the AFL situation (freo anyone? hmmmmm they seem to be given the heave up(ho) so to spak).......
anyway it was a very interesting article that picked my attention. Still think that we were screwed over because we allowed the AFL free reign and the stupid emotional public went along with it......

Have to admit that I've turnned off cricket because of incidents like this.Solar wrote:found it a strange strange article....

There is too much of a victim mentality in the Sub-Continent.
If they uphold the result reversal, I'm done with the sport.
Whenever we sledge, we get talked down and told to smarten up. If they do it and we report it, they threaten to take their bat and ball and go home.
It suckes, somewhat.
The lid is off after Round 2! Enjoy the journey, coz you just don't know where we'll end up. Live for today and seize the moment.
Re: anyone read Tim Lanes article
and yet the football public was happy to allow freo to cry up a strom (their coach entered the arena before the match had finished (baker still was kicking for goal) and the AFL was strong armed into changing a result despite over 100 years of the same ruling over a situation like this.WayneJudson42 wrote:Have to admit that I've turnned off cricket because of incidents like this.Solar wrote:found it a strange strange article....

Find it a VERY interesting comparison, from a journalist who protested loudly about the result being changed at the time....

Agree with this. Prefer Shield cricket now - much more interesting. The ICC have allowed the game at international level to be hijacked and have just rolled over. They have redifined what being inept is. The poor sportmanship now running rampant throughout the sub-continent area is just killing off the game. I'd rather go watch a shield match at the junction oval or Punt Rd than pay a small fortune to watch the tainted international game.WayneJudson42 wrote:Have to admit that I've turnned off cricket because of incidents like this.Solar wrote:found it a strange strange article....

I want to stand for something. I'm a loyal person and I think at the end of my career it will be great to look back and know that I'm a St Kilda person for life.

its a typical st kilda supporters loser-ish sentiment to still whinge about a match a few years ago...that was just a calamity for all involvedGrumpyOne wrote:The two points are gone, lets move on.
next they will join people running onto footy park during the prelim in 04 and this instance together to formulate that the afl is against us
its a disgrace that supporters look for excuses for why the team didnt win...simple...we weren't good enough when it mattered...might have got close but its still the same result whether its 6 or 60 points
a loss

Lane changed his view a few years down the track... this is not a whinge (did cost us a top 4 spot) but an interesting change of tack......

Totally agree Solar.
Pakistan by not resuming play forfeited the Test, which is the only correct result.
And the umpire was correct to contunue play until he heard/was advised the siren had gone (as per the Kerry Good incident) so the Baker point should stand.
Maybe the MCC will give us our 2 points back !!!!!
And it's not just whingeing about ancient history.
Those two points we had robbed from us by the AFL moral crusaders cost us big time when the finals came around.
Butterss should have contested it in a court.
And I'll tell you know we would have won as the AFL's "moral" decision was in clear breach of their own rules.
Was a pathetic effort by Rod, Archie and co.

found it interesting that lane was willing to admitt that the rules were broken (he jumped up and down that the moral thing to do was give the points to freo). I always wondered what would have happened if Lenny had asked for a head count when the players and coaches had come onto the field while baker was having a shot for goal.Enrico_Misso wrote:Totally agree Solar.

The AFL got away with it because Butterss melted and refused to fight for the contested ball.
Butterss got delisted for gutlessness

Actually Solar, whatever Lane's other sins in this issue he's been quite consistent. Here's an article he wrote about Sirengate the day after it happened.
If you were to tell me Lane is a pratt for many of his opinions I'd agree with you. But in this instance he's not, and his tune hasn't altered.Drawn game if AFL plays by the rules
03/05/2006
THE AFL presides over the foremost sporting competition in the land and takes great pride in doing it. To have its product reduced to the professional wrestling-like scenes that were witnessed in Launceston on Sunday must be deeply humiliating. So must the fact that a team has been robbed of a victory due to the inadequacy of a basic facility for which the central administration is ultimately responsible. The league will be desperate to control the damage.
The fact that a determination on last Sunday's game between St Kilda and Fremantle is now in the hands of the AFL Commission is evidence of this. It is also a thoroughly depressing turn of events for anyone who has ever liked to believe that sporting events are precisely that, and that they are placed in the hands of umpires and that those umpires are in control of them from start to finish. That is the way sport ought to be played. If circumstances ever occur to tempt administrators to attend to on-field results themselves, they ought - as was once said on another sporting issue - nine times out of 10 not go there, and on the 10th occasion, think about it and then not go there.
The fact is that the outcome of this match was determined on Sunday and that should have been it. We don't do video outcomes. The umpires determine when a match is over. It is there in the laws of the game and no further correspondence need be entered into. It was disappointing for Fremantle but, as someone once famously noted, such is life. What happened on the field was farce enough. That it was then carried over into Monday was high farce, and that it has now continued through to Wednesday is Himalayan high farce.
The outcome of this game must be determined according to the game's laws, not the commission's whim. For as long as the code has been played the umpires have signalled the end of any match and players have known that they must play until such time as that has occurred. It's incumbent upon administrations to ensure they provide the infrastructure to enable this to happen with reliability so that, particularly where large crowds are involved, the possibility of unrest is minimised.
There was, somewhat infamously, unrest at another Tasmanian ground in 1967. It happened at West Park, Burnie, as the state final between Wynyard and North Hobart came to a thrilling climax. With Wynyard a couple of points in front, deep into time-on in the last quarter of a bitterly fought contest, the ball was kicked forward for North Hobart. While it was in flight the siren sounded, a split second before it was marked by North Hobart's full forward David Collins.
The umpire, John Pilgrim, hadn't heard the siren and paid the mark. He then became aware of the timekeepers' blast, called time, and prepared to allow Collins to take his shot for goal.
The Wynyard fans were like those supporting Fremantle last Sunday: outraged. In this case, they invaded the ground and removed the goal posts. The match was never finished. Mob rule prevailed.
To award Sunday's match to Fremantle, which I suspect is now a serious possibility, would in effect be a reversion to mob rule. It would be to give the game to the team whose coach invaded the ground like an angry wrestler, demanding that the contest was his. It would be to hand the prize over to the kids who turned on the loudest tantrum, screaming: "They're our four points!"
This game was completed on Sunday and it ended in a draw. Fremantle was unlucky, there's no doubt about that, just as Collingwood was unlucky to lose by a point to Sydney last year when a timekeeper error late in the last quarter robbed them of 13 seconds. That result stood, as it had to, and so should this one.
The question is: does the AFL want to appease its own humiliation more than it wants to ensure that the game's rules, sport's rules, are honoured?

Both are classic examples of the respective codes going to s***...the Saints Freo game was just a precursor to more wild rule bending by the AFL (why wasn't Sydney stripped of it's points for having 19 players on the ground against North?), as the ICC now does freely for sub-continental cricket.
Well, nothing can be done for us, but I hope the Aussies belt the s*** out of those whinging cheating bastards in the 4th test. Some justice would be nice.
