Carroll no longer training with the Saints?

Post: # 670165Post Raven »

It seems to me after reading this article that Carroll is no longer training with us, but rather training privately in Warrnambool. The entire article doesn't mention the Saints at all, but that might just be because it's now a given that he's doing his proper footy training with us. Hard to say, really. It doesn't say he is, but doesn't say he isn't either.

Can Saintsational finally breathe a collective sigh of relief, is he gone?

Unfortunately?

He has had a problem with alcohol the same as Cousins has had a problem with drugs.

Deserves a second chance, the same as we are prepared to offer Cousins.

Just because he does a pre-season with us doesn't mean an automatic drafting by us.

If he is good enough, and clean and sober, good luck to him.

I'm pretty sure we don't commence training until November 17, so nobody can be training with us presently.

I'm also pretty sure that Archie stated quite categorically that the newspaper article linking him to the Saints didn't quote anybody from teh Saints and that we have had no discussions with or about Carroll.

I'd prefer he learnt how to play football first.

I'm happy to give Ben another go, but Carroll seems to be a loose cannon that may implode.
I'm pretty sure we don't commence training until November 17, so nobody can be training with us presently.
That's because players get 8 weeks leave after the last match contested by the club. plus one week over christmas-new year.

If Carroll is a contacted player i.e his contract is yet to run out Melbourne would not want him to train with any other club until they re-sign him or delist him.
If Carroll is already an uncontracted player and he were to train with St Kilda, am I correct in my interpretation that St Kilda would pay him $575 per week until he gets drafted by some club.

guys..carroll, if drafted, would be the no 33/34 player on our list...one thing he does is gives us a big body as back up to Max, Goose and even BJ at times played back as well as freeing up Fish..he might only play a handful of games but at the same time it means we are not going to have no plan if maxy goes down with a string, or Goose doesnt come up....or we need an extra big body down back..i think it has some merit he would come cheap - the suggestion is Melb would have to pay his salary of 250k and we might pick up part of that..trust me Melb want to get rid of him so badly they will pay the large portion of that anyway....
I think it provides us with a better alternative than having to use Sam Fisher or Gilbert across half back or even Raph for a while when the other boys go down and they will go down..they do every year - at least this way we can continue to increase those players I mentioned instead of using them as pinch-hitting across half back but instead as actual midfelders in that critical rotation. The area where we need to improve to match the best sides

Footballers' binge drinking revealed
Article from: Herald Sun

By Evonne Barry

November 02, 2008 12:03pm

AFL players are binge-drinking at up to six times the rate of other young Australian men, a comprehensive study of footballers' alcohol problems reveals.
An anonymous survey of 582 AFL players has uncovered "extremely high" rates of "risky drinking" among the elite of Aussie rules, the Herald Sun reports.

The study, commissioned by the AFL and AFL Players' Association, found players believed their health, careers, relationships and finances were being jeopardised by their drinking habits.

It also concluded "formal club rules on alcohol consumption had little effect" on players' behaviour.
Senior players were shown to be just as likely as rookies to over-indulge, with age or status having little influence on alcohol consumption.

Players' wives were among the few moderating influences, with single men more prone to binges than their married counterparts, authors of the report published in the Medical Journal of Australia found.

The two-week period following a season's final siren, beginning with the infamous "Mad Monday" celebrations, was the most dangerous.

During that fortnight, 37 per cent of players consume more than 86 standard drinks, putting themselves at "high risk of long-term harm".

More than a quarter continued that trend during their holidays.

It is estimated that only 6 per cent of Australian men aged 20-29 drink as heavily.

I have to wonder when "possibly training with St Kilda" turned into "being drafted up by St Kilda and being in the 22 every week"

No article has said we are going to pick him up and and Archie Fraser himself has said we arnt going for him. Even if he does train with us its not certain we will even look at him let alone select him in the draft LET ALONE play him in our best 22 or at all.

Chill the f*** out people

I don't personally believe he is, but I'll leave that judgement to RL.

I hope we pick him up.I know he has issues and he,s no SOS but in the past our defense has gone down in injuries.Dempster gone,Maguire no one knows,Maxy you never know. And heaven forbid something happens to Sam Fisher.I definately want to pick up a KP defensive kid in the draft along with Cuz and stock up with youth with the remaining picks and rookie draft. We were a very intimidating side with Hamill,Powell and Black. When we one of our younger brigade were felled we knew we had someone that would fly the flag.We now really only have Baker and King.If carroll could be pick up he,d be on the cheap with the Dees paying some of his contract, would know that he is on his last chance and could fill a hole when it arosed.
People seem to think that this bloke is gonna take somone elses position i reckon he will be a stop gap measure.
