well that's a promising sign. Actually planning for the next generation after our current core A grade players.
I like the way the club is going about things off the field. FF, Drain, Hutchy. They seem to have a plan and are step by step implementing it.

Agree. Seems like a real hard nut - and he won the Geelong U/18 B&F as an underage player, so he clearly has some ability. Hopefully, he, Armo & Pick 13 can form the core of our young up-and-coming midfield crew for the next decade!

clever half forward who might not get it 40 times but uses it well when he gets it. Has class written all over him.

Not that anyone has said it in this thread, but the next time somebody posts the name "Paul Chapman" on this site in relation to a likeness with Jack Steven, I hereby suggest they donate $50 to the running costs involved with the site.

:D

I've always thought of him as more of a Gary Ablett type.

I'm more amazed that football followers use the term 'hard nut' and 'Paul Chapman' in the same sentence, or even paragraph.

Just cause he's bald and ugly, does not make him tough.

Very, very far from it.

Yeah I've often heard how similar Steven and Chapman are but from what I've seen I don't really see it...

I expect that he will play in the forward pocket for a couple of seasons to serve his apprenticeship before making a move to the midfield...

I do see a bit of Gary Ablett in him but if that is who we are going to be comparing him to during his development we are setting ourselves up for a huge let down...

Ok now I am taking this quote as gospel.
If the reason for the delisting of Birss was true, then we would have seen those players in '08.
Not to mention less of Fiora.
Besides, call me old fashioned but the "kids" have to earn their spot over the older guys anyway, isnt it the generally good practise to pick your best available team each week...?
Sorry but that reason just doesnt cut it under scrutiny

Steven was picked up as an bottom age player and was only training part time I thought (due to school commitments)? Wouldn't have had the fitness/physique to play seniors in 08. not many draftees outside top 10 get games in their first season.
armo - fitness probably still a work in progress, and harder for him to get a gig given he can only play one position and the quality of players ahead of him in that position

Very true, Stevens was not expected to get anywhere near a game in 08 but actually made the emergancy list a few times, including in a final... very impressive IMO...

Considering he was a part time player, Harvey really seemed to take him under his wing over the year and they seem to have gotten along pretty well from a very distant view point... Hopefully he has instilled some of his work ethic into the boy...

My tip for the #35 in '09 and beyond!!

its good to see the club actually acknowledge we have 2/3 of a 22 that is quality and we are now looking to build that instead of an over-reliance on roo, lenny, dal, kosi etc

Do you really think that we only have 2 or 3 quality players in our best 22? Who are they?

How many do Hawthorn have? And who are they?

I think he meant two / thirds... not 2 or 3

Oh.. that makes more sense... and is probably about right. Probably should have worked it out when he named four players...
