Lyon happy with trade, but still eyes Cousins

ST KILDA coach Ross Lyon says the addition of Bulldog midfielder Farren Ray does not mean the club has lost interest in former Eagle Ben Cousins.
The Saints landed Ray and the Bulldogs’ third-round pick (no. 48 overall) on the final day of trade week in exchange for its second-round pick.
But Lyon said Ray’s signing was not an indication it had shied away from the idea of taking Cousins, also a midfielder, in the NAB AFL Draft or NAB AFL Pre-Season Draft.
“We’re all interested in Ben Cousins but what I’d like to say is that’s clearly in the hands of the AFL commission (to allow him to play)," he said.
"Ben’s health is a priority but everyone deserves a second chance,â€

but 6 picks
that means we need to have 6 changes
who can they be?
With MG re-signing, we dont have much to move on
Delist
L Fisher
M Rix
M Ferguson
Retire
Harvey
Gehrig
who else will be on the block?
there has to be one more
Howard re- signed for 2
would be a waste to delist them
L. Fisher and Rix are the most likely to go.
Birss not too far behind, particularly with Ray coming in, and how close we think we might be to Cousins in PSD.
Ferguson has had plenty of backing, although i rate the bloke, and see him in a similar position to what Gram was in the VFL a few seasons ago (plenty of promise and just waiting to tear it apart one level higher) how many can we keep carrying? I do fear for him, and he is a great bloke off the field.

Pretty hard to knock the reasoning behind taking Ray.
We lack pace and he ticks the box.
We lack midfield depth and he ticks this box too.
He needs some work on his hardness at the ball but we have plenty of inside mids and need players who can link up.
I don’t believe his foot skills are as bad as some on here are stating.
I’d personally hoped for the following trade...
X & Raph to Port Adelaide for pick 4
We get McIntosh + 4
Lose 2 x Clarkes + pick 13

Attard is now a rookieSt Fidelius wrote:IMO I would think that Attard would be worried than Birss...mick13 wrote:I fear for Birss.
Tough, yes, but if there was a choice between the two, Birss has more strings to his bow IMO
So i think if we want 6 picks in normal draft there has to be 6 changes on main list
plus we move on some rookies and pick up another 4 rookies so we could have 10 changes by the end of the year
so if it is 6 off the main list attard wont be one of them

Agreed - very purposeful statement, sounds like there's been a lot of planning and very definitive comments from RL ... very good stuff

Nice sentiments from Lyon with some reasonable logic applied.
However, I disagree about it freeing those three blokes up he mentioned - I said in my post in the other thread that the player required to free them up was Lovett - a totally different player to Ray.
Ray is a midfielder; he doesn't have the composure (at this stage) to play in defence nor the footskills to play in attack.
I've been critical of Lyon at times but I've always fancied his good work at trade week. We picked up Birss and M Gardiner for #43 in the first year, Schneider, Dempster, King & C Gardiner for #26 on this day last year. We've given a little, but gained a lot - two forwards, two ruckman, a defender and a midfielder, all with something to offer.
This is perhaps his weakest of the three, but in saying that, I was very pleased with the past two. It's always nice to see us being active at trade week and in a year where little was done, it's good to see the recruiting staff and Drainy tick the deal off before it went through.
So whilst Ray doesn't make me jump for joy, he offers food for thought and hopefully, the kid we've earmarked for 31 slips through to 48
