I like Eddy, but he certainly hasn't proved himself. (Watching him in the finals I got the feeling he wasn't going to make it at all.)
CJ -- terrific trier, but he's never going to be good enough for No.4
Armo -- way off proving himself.
Raph. A season like he played the last few games, and he'd qualify.
To me the only real No 4 is Bally. 14 just isn't a St Kilda icon number. He'd be following in Pluggers footsteps too, from 14 to 4.
Or leave it vacant until our next ultra-loyal Ultra-Star emerges.

Only 3 players have had four numbers in "recent" memory.saint66au wrote:Interesting. Cant actually recall Frankie wearing 8Am I right in thinking no Saints player (in the last 25 years anyway) has had more jumper numbers than Frankie Peckett. Started in 52, then 29, then 8, then finished in 1.
Craig Devonport wore 8 and 1
Burkie went from 52 to 29 to 3
Is my memory going??? lol
Frankie - 53, 29, 8, 1
Barry Breen - 44, 27, 17, 4
And the legendary Grant Thomas - 45, 30, 40, 18

Disgraceful decision.Animal Enclosure wrote: That would be akin to giving Stephen Newport #1 after Barks retired!
Particularly on a dud like Newport.
Some numbers are sacred.
At our club they are (at least)
- 1, 4, 5, 10, 12, 23, 35
These numbers should be earned, not just allocated.
And if no-one is good enough to wear them in the spirit of the names who made them famous - then don't allocate them.
And 35 should be mothballed for at least a few years.
Must be about time we ressurected the famous number 60 as worn by Robert Mace !

Correct, but not officially.SENsaintsational wrote:And Nicky Winmar!Enrico_Misso wrote: Must be about time we ressurected the famous number 60 as worn by Robert Mace !
And I probably should add "7" to the list of sacred numbers as well !
1, 4, 5, 7, 10, 12, 23, 35
Also worn by Stewie Trott.

Because I think that he has turned a corner rather than "fluked" a couple of good games.Saintschampions08 wrote:I still can't understand why people are jumping the gun on Raph...
Sure - he played a few good games at the end of the season, but why does this outweigh the number of terrible games he's played?

And what is wrong with the numbers 2, 3, 8, 9, 11?
What constitutes a sacred number?
#2 worn by Hammil, Frawley, Mynott, Sidebottom?
#3 worn by Burke, Krakouer, Ross Smith
#8 worn by Max, Glen Elliot, Alan Morrow
#9 worn by G-Train, John McIntosh, Ian Synman
#11 worn by Greg Burns
What makes #12 sacred?
Because it is Roo's and was worn by Colling?
Why not #26?
Afterall its now worn by Dal and was once worn by John Manzie.
I don't understand what makes a junper # sacred?

But don't agree that they are superstars.
I think numbers 1 and 4 and possibly 35
are EXTRA special and should not be given out lightly.
ie to wear those numbers you need to be a budding champion
as opposed to a Stephen Newport or a Craig Devonport
or a Paul Morwood.
Agree that you can only quarantine so many numbers.
So I'll stick with 1, 4 and 35.
Whilst I still believe 5, 7, 10, 12, 23 are special.
More special than 2, 3, 8, 9, 11 (though perhaps 3 should go to my special list).
But 1, 4, 35 are numbers that speak for themselves.
And I believe players need to EARN them.

congratulations to him on winning "most promising" at the b&f last night.St Chris wrote:My choice is Raph Clarke. He has now shown the skills, pace and confidence that the many people have spoken about, but not many of us fans had seen. his last 6 weeks of the 2008 season were fantastic.
it's a great achievement considering what he's been through ... the epilepsy, his father's health and the merciless hammering he received on here.
of all the young candidates, armitage, eddy etc, raph seems the most worthy of no 4.
unless you give it to someone more established like bj or fisher.
