'Go the Mighty....'
Growing up, l was always a bit envious of my mates teams having a proper club mascot ie. Tigers, Kangaroos, Magpies, etc. & l reckon l may not have been the only kid at school who barracked for the Saints if we had had a more marketable & appealing brand. l am a traditionalist through and through, however l think a change (well..not a change, 'addition') such as this would only serve to make our club more dynamic & exciting to barrack for, to youngters in particular. And the mascot? 'The Panthers' -it's in keeping with tradition as it was used briefly in the 50s. & we'll also always be known as the Saints because the name SAINT kilda wont change! Are you with me on this? l mean, What is 'a Saint' really?

I don't believe even kids are that superficial.
They like supporting a winning team, end of story. If they have a marketable player that helps too.
I'm sure the extra 10,000 members the Hawks have enjoyed for the last 2 seasons are mostly kids. I'd love to know how many extra No 23 Guernseys they've sold too.
So, we've got Rooey, now we just need a flag. Simple!

I remember the St George Dragons. Was Illawarra a part of clubs merging?doggerel wrote:I could go with the suggestion of the OP. The St George Illawarra DRagons in the NRL are alternatively called Saints & Dragons.
What is the history of St Kilda being Panthers? Why was it stopped I wonder?
St Kilda's 2 premiership captains are Tassie born. The Doc & Roo.

Off season thread topics. We're well ahead of schedule.
1. <insert name> - are we interested?
2. Trade <insert name>
3. Sack <insert coach/board>
4. Change the song.
5. Change the clash guernsey
6. We should do what <insert premiers name> did.
7. Get excited about 17/18yo no one has ever seen play.
8. Get excited about <insert injury prone player's name> pre-season
But this is a new one. So we need a new mascot? And i'm very attached to the old one. Very attached.
Still, I'm willing the give it a go.
It needs to be something that engages with the internet savvy Gen Y folk as well as creates opportunities for marketing and merchandising.
I present the St Kilda Dancing Bananas . Go DBs! It features all 4 of our traditional colours as well as a ready made outfit for a mascot.
And it means we can get a clash guernsey out of the back shed.

Just be thankful we aren't the "Blues".
In any case, a team is more than a mascot. There are "Saints" teams all around the world.
If we really wanted to be true to the St Kilda name (the Scottish Archipelago), then we could be...
The St Kilda Puffins
The St Kilda Wood Mice (or Field Mice)
The St Kilda Wrens
The St Kilda Gannets
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St_Kilda,_Scotland
If we wanted to be true to St Kilda the Melbournian suburb...
The St Kilda Hookers
The St Kilda Trannies
The St Kilda Junkies
Or the new species now found in the area
The Gentrified St Kilda Yuppies

We were known as the Panthers for a couple of years in the '40s (finished last both years).
Plenty of red white and black panthers in this part of the world.
Lose what traditions we have now and you will supporting the Tassie Devils or Hillbillys before you blink.
Old enough to repaint, but young enough to sell

We were also known as the seagulls at one stage however it was never as strong as the Saints.
"...If there has been one recurring theme through this whole shocking mess, it has been the misguided, inflated egos and their ill-judged determination to cling to long-standing old boy friendships. The bad advice that has guided the selfish and culpable James Hird has not only punctuated this saga but symbolised it..."

Panthers I reckon... I'm sure I've seen a photo of two blokes in suits in front of a St Kilda Panthers sign from the Fifties (?).
The only place I can think of seeing that would be in 'The Point of it All'.
Ps. What's the '.' under the 'St' in our crest abbreviating if not 'Saint' ? Street? Stumped?
Is our name the name of an island, suburb or what's written on our logo?

St George less merged and more "took over" the ailing Illawarra (known as The Steelers) some years ago and became the St George Illawarra Dragons, St George had been called the Dragons officially but the "Saints" is more of an unofficial nickname used by fans mostly.Launcestonsaint wrote:I remember the St George Dragons. Based on their mascot I've heard them referred to as the Gold Coast Gaysohwhenthesaints! wrote:Interesting post, it's hard to know what is marketable these days.
The new GC team has opted to have no identifying catch cry and will be known as the simply the Gold Coast Football club, and the Kangaroo's are wanting to be referred to as the North Melbourne Football Club....
