Highlights and lowlights..Season 2008

Post: # 650908Post saint66au »

Just my thoughts on the best and worst of 2008. Would be interested in others too.

HIGHLIGHTS...

* The last 5 weeks. Sure its been a rollercoaster but the Adelaide, Essendon and Collingwood wins were emotional highs.

* The win v Hawthorn. Didnt mean much in the wash up of the season but at the time proved to me that our best was as good as anyones.

* Banger's farewell..sort of covered above but thought the Club organised the Round 21 game brilliantly.

*Raph Clarke. One of the genuine thrills I get from watching footy is seeing a player pilloried by his own fans show something. In the last few weeks raph has gone from whipping boy to one of the first picked. The only young'un to show anything on Sat night when the pressure really WAS on.

LOWLIGHTS..

* The first quarter v North at Carrara. The worst football we played all season by a long way. Even my faith in the new regime almost flatered. turned out to be a turning point in the season though

* Membership numbers. Genuinely dissapointing. Got off to a flyer then stalled very badly once the season proper started..on the back of a NAB Cup win!! Club must be very aggressive marketing in 09. Finals 4 out of the last 5 years..we cannot be the only Vic side to show a drop in Membership again.

* No Rising Star nomination. Not so much that we didnt get one. more that we really didnt deserve one. Saturday night...Rioli vs Armo/Eddy..nuff said.

Thats just a few off the top of my head. Lets hear some more :-)

The comeback win on the gold coast.

The collingwood win last week

Harvey's tribute match

Lowlights

The prelim. Was a disaster and a shocking feeling seeing Harvey carried off again dissapointed.

sitting at the Gabba watching us play close to our worst footy of the year.

Highlights:

I went to my first few AFL games. my current record (4 wins, 0 losses)

We finished the season well

RL is developing as a coach and the players are responding

Lowlights:

Harvey retires/ Gehrig only played a handful of games

Key men injured

Our players, altho have shown that their best is one of the best in the league, we are still inconsistent at times.

LOOKING FORWARD TO:
Eddy/Armo/Jones/Allen/McEvoy developing.

Maguire/Ball/Dempster coming back fit and firing

Maxy to play at least another year

The draft

"Another storied win in Robert Harvey's career. They say he is the embodiment of their motto of strength through loyalty, and on the day he became just the tenth man to play 350 league games the saints reward him with a seemingly impossible victory."

Frasers injury and our lack of full forward
Goose reinjuring himself

Highlights:

Winning pre season cup against Adelaide in Adelaide.

Hawthorn win

North Win considering the start

Late season form

Raph Clarke finally fulfilling his potential

Harv's showing Dermie how to play.

Max showing that maybe Buddy isn't the greatest player of all time

FInal win against Collingwood

Beating Carlton again especially when they were so sure they were going to beat us.

Lowlights

Losing to West Coast, Port and Collingwood twice, teams I feel are inferior.

1st game against Sydney

X starting the season well only to be struck down by soft tissue injury again

Goose getting injured again

Bakes never getting going

Not making the Grand Final again

Collingwood supporters

Knowing next year that the only game I'll see Harv's play will be the E J Whitten Legends match, where once again he'll show Dermie how to play the game.
