Contested Ball - thats the reason we lost!
Simply can't win a game of football with that kind of smashing in the contested ball.

Totally agree.
The hunters became the hunted.
We front up like that next week and we are out in straight sets................

"Our season is still alive," Lyon said. "It's not the end for Robert."
Harvey's mates stood listening to those words, perhaps planning to keep the AFL's longest career lingering a while yet. Then turned into softcocks and blew it YET again.

They're too skilled and too physically strong.
How is a thin player like Gilbert supposed to win a contested ball against someone like Ling! I would say 8 out of 10 times Gilbert would lose.
With those tanked skillful players against our frail army of Dal Santo, Gilbert, C.Gardiner, X.Clarke....etc the percentages start swinging grossly in favour of the cats.

Reasons we lost
Too many players with below AFL standard skills,be it by foot or hand
Too many players that fumble the ball when put under any sort of pressure
Too many players with little footy smarts
Too many players that are battlers at best
Too many players with a defensive frame of mind
Too many players who don't take the first option and move the ball quickly

Bring back the Lockett era
Disagree.
We get a few goals from contested ball, clearance situations like we should of, we halt momentum in the 3rd, we are even at qtr time etc.
Contested ball is why we lost, and if we get smashed like that next week we will not win the football match, doesn't matter how well we move the ball/deliver it. We simply didn't have our hand on the ball enough.

One thing that amazed me was how they'd just kick the ball, and 9 times out of 10, a team mate would instinctively run to the hot spot and gain possesion.
Truly remarkable team footy... and explains why they are playing so well.

The lid is off after Round 2! Enjoy the journey, coz you just don't know where we'll end up. Live for today and seize the moment.

Where they have moved ahead over the last few years is that we've lost a lt of mature bodies in G, Hamill, Powell, Pecket and Thommo.brown-coat wrote:They're too skilled and too physically strong.

The reason we lost is Geelongs work rate. They didn't stop all day.
They run to create space even if they aren't going to get the ball.
This creates doubt in the defenders mind as which player to go to as there
are so many options. With the Saints we are so Roo conscious that they can
confidently peel off there man and double/triple team him.
An aside to this is with the pressure we put on at the beginning of each
quarter I believe most other sides would have cracked.
I was actually proud of the guys yesterday. To win the whole thing they
need to learn to put pressure on for 30 minutes not 15/20. Easier said
than done against such a good team.

One of the big differences in the Cats to us other than their obvious disposal skills is the fact that we have only a few in our team that can take a contested mark whereas they have just about everyone in the team who is capable of doing it.
We have Roo, Goddard, Fisher, Kosi and Max and that's about it.
I would play Allen on the backline and Mcevoy full forward this week and also bring in Armitage. what have we got to lose? also maybe Ferguson as a backman. Out should go Gilbert, Blake, Gwilt and X Clarke for starters, Gilbert always has a go but never takes a contested mark and his lack of kicking with his right foot when needed often causes turnovers.
I realize my suggested changes will not occur and Ross may even bring Fiora back but a final experience for those 3 young players would be good for their future development.
