Key Position Defender

Post: # 638056Post kingy0701 »

Hi everyone,

Long time reader, first time poster. From todays game against Geelong, I often though how handy another key defender would be. Hopefully we regain Maguire next year (signs look promising), however if he can't get back to his best who should we look at come draft time??

IMO the following players should be looked at.
plugger66 wrote:Another player we may be interested in is Jon Thompson a 6'4 CHB 91 KG. Aged 18. Plays CHB in SAFL very agile. Been in the best in the seniors 7 times this season already. Also very quick and can play on smalls as well as talls. His leap is also one of the best in the SAFL. Ready to play next year. And probably will go around picks 7-12.

The other thing is he wants to play in Victoria next season.
Also Jackson Trengrove and Jordan Lisle spring to mind. All would be an ideal fit in the back half for us, helps to free up Chips and BJ.

Any thoughts???

I don't care who theyget... as long as they can play. We need another key fwd, so if we got a defender, I'd switch BJ up the ground asap.

Too many playmakers playing down back IMO to fill the gaps.

Kosi should play in defence and forget him playing in the ruck...

Give Kosi a position and an opponent to play on week in week out..

I guarantee you will see a better player if that happens

He would be made to look like a fool in the backline on a player. He is at his best when playing around the ground on no one else.

Didn't Kosi win the Rising Star playing in defence?

now that blake gone its time to swing kosi to CHB, bring M.Gardiner in who put on a clinic at Casey Fields on the weekend, rotate both him and king off the bench and slot one F.Gehrig into FF..... Why not?

Yes but I am pretty sure that was 7 years ago. He isnt able to play there anymore.

Kosi won the rising star award 2000 at CHB. Today I wouldn't consider him for this role. The reason:
1 Seems to have got slow and lumbering.
2 Not accountable enough
3 Causes too many turnovers when small pressure is applied.
4 Poor short kick and I have seen sveal goals occur when he has transferred play in defense.
5 Good crash pack mark when at best. Thisis more valuable up forward.
6 To me Kosi doesnt look fit enough to fit a running role from half back.

Midfield clearances and clear winners are needed to make an effective forward line.

You need to protect the ball handler to increase posession efficiency

Yeah, but how long ago? Give Kosi a trade, and let the other club worry about it.

Not more than a fool than Malcolm Blight playing Barry Hall at Full Back

again his first year was in the back half and was given a job, a job he did well...

To suggest he would be made to look like a fool in the back line astounds me...

I would like to see Kosi in the back half and if and when Maguire is fit play in the forward half

Yes Goose shows plenty up forward. Luckily for the Saints you are not coaching us unless of course we want a priorty pick.

I am only suggesting Goose as a possibility ....

You still haven't addressed your reasons as to why Kosi would look like a fool in the back half, even after he won the rising star in that position??

He is far to slow now. Simple. No other reason and I am supported by the last 2 coaches.

Kosi isnt as agile as he used to be.
The back injury early on in his career started that.

If he can get back his agility and mobilty then it might be an option, but he seems to be lumbering abit and looks slow.

With a big pre-season it might be a possiblity, otherwise no.

Would be surprised to see Goose back playing again.
I really hope he can make it, but it's not looking good.

Re Kosi.
Why does everybody remember the past?
One good season. 4 or 5 good games four years later. Nothing since.

The guy is completing his 8th season and is hardly setting the world on fire.
Actually, I think he has burnt his bridges.

Time to move on.

i honestly think Goose needs to play forward for the first 12 games next year, if he plays it well then we have a big full forward.. he can kick a mile. He has to get his body right before he is thrown back into CHB.. I also think Goddard should be played in fwd 50- but maybe that is a waste with his kicking being so damn good.. Wing for Goddard

Goose has no skills at all that would make him a forward. If he isnt good enough to play back then his career is over.

and playing him in the ruck supports that issue???

6 hit outs to Goddards 2???

Yeah righto, don't go out a limb here

So he is not "far too slow" to play forward???

Not far too slow to play ruck???

But far too slow to play back...

Kosi will never play back again - NO agility...

We need MIDS...that carry the footy and kick it well.....about 4 of them...

Not sure if you know anything about footy but backmen are much faster than ruckmen and if I have ever supported him as a forward I cannot remember that. Maybe playing there occasionally but never permanent. As fot supporting everthing the club does you must have confused me with someone else.

Doesn't matter where you play him at the moment.

Big marking forwards are out of style. You need a more mobile player, and defenders have had to adapt.

The likes of Franklin, Roughie, even Cloke would have him for breakfast.

Not to mention Brow and co.

That's why Blake has done a fair job at CHB. Coz he's mobile enough.

yeah Im not too sure if you know anything about footy either..

Kosi has a knee injury which would have hampered his speed this year...

Again Kosi won the Rising Star in his first year in defence .....

Kosi has as much pace when fit than Bock or Milburn IMO...

IMO worth a shot

St Fid, probably about time you put the keyboard away for the night....it's getting embarrassing!!

It's all about match ups these days, not just plonk someone in a position....Kosi is too slow in mind and body these days for CHB. Who would he play on in the top 8 sides??
Mooney - NO
Ottens, maybe
Buddy - No
Roughead - No
Murphy - No Minson, possible
Cloke - No, too slow
Hall, No
Hale, Petrie, Thompson, Edwards - possibles in here...
CHB we need run, carry, good decisions and good disposal skills...this is not Kosi....Deep fwd and 2nd/3rd ruck is the go!
Feel we have to lower expectations on him cause he aint the player we all thought he was going to be, unfortunately!
