How many players have Debuted in a final?

Post: # 635951Post Otiman »

With Jack Steven being picked as an in this week, there is a chance, through selection or as an emergency through injury, that he will play his first game as a final.

Who else has done this? I think Gwilt played his 2nd game in a final. No others come to mind.

Maybe not for us but I'm pretty sure one Dermot Brereton did.

Was going to say that but had a quick search around and couldn't find anything to confirm it - I still think it's correct, though!!

I remember it, also remember when they interviewed him, he was a cocky S.O.B. saying that the defender he was going to play should worry more about him than he about the defender.

I think that if they wanted to play Steven in a final that they would have already given him a game..

Selection is most likely an encouragement award.

I could be wrong (correct me if I am) but wouldn't the most famous of the finals' debutants be Ted Hopkins for Carlton ?

Didn't he kick 4 goals to beat Collingwood in a GF ? And then never be heard from again ?

He played 29 games for Carlton, 20 of them, in fact, in 1970. So, he wasn't a debutante. He only played one more game after the 1970 GF.

Richard Hadley for Brissy??... I know the Premiership win was only his 2nd or 3rd game, not sure if the finals leading upto it was his first....

I agree too, however, I feel warm and fuzzy about a Steven debut in this game, not sure why, have only seen the kid play in a NAB Cup game....

Think Eddy is OK, just might not be going quite well enough to keep his spot ideally, probably Steven is not the right replacement, maybe Mini isn't either, maybe Eddy can play a defensive role, he's on the edge.....

Bill James of Richmond played in a premiership team on his debut in 1920.

If Jack Steven debuts and does exactly what he did last time in the pre-season when we played Geelong, he will have cult status for life!

Paul Spargo 1985 was the last while Travis Payze 1965 I think was the one and only Saints player to do so.

Debuted 1982 VFL 1st Semi-Final.
Debut in the VFL 1st semi final of 1982: Booted 5 goals that day in a near best afield performance.

If my memory is ok i think Len Thompson debuted for Collingwood in a final many years ago and played a top game.

Thanks Perfectionist. I had the feeling I wasn't quite on the mark there.
You've got a memory like an elephant :-)
I'm envious of the finals you've seen too
