Gilbert

Post: # 620320Post jonesy »

He deserves a thread.

What has happened to him??

Last year I honestly thought he'd be a gun,a very good player at worst.

What has happened this year,as he's been terrible at best.

Was last year a flash in the pan? How can a youngster go backwards at such an alarming rate

I don't know,he's just lost everything it seems.

injuries effect confidence, he was out for a substantial period.

i think he will be ok, however he was overrated by many last year.

I actually thought he won a fair bit of ball & played ok, although he did let davis slip at times but that is going to happen to most people who play on him. I think Gilbo's greatest liability is that he frequently negates his good work by butchering his delivery - but he's not Robinson Crusoe there is he?

Don't be too hard on him. He's attacking the ball, he just isn't winning it.

He does need to spend the off season learning to kick because he has

being shocking.

I'm not sure he was that overrated last year. He was very exciting to watch last year, strong, sidestepping, fend-offs etc...

Has gone backwards but you see this kind of thing all the time, kids come in with confidence and enthusiasm then wane a bit, then improve as they get more experience.

I'll say one thing when this guy's got the ball I haven't s--t myself as much since Raph Clarke was playing. If hitting the opposition on the chest is the object of the game he's the best kick in the competition.

Not too sure what games some of you watch.

Gilbert is now playing where he is being groomed to play - in defence.

His spoiling in marking contests was effective, however twice there was no support at ground level and he was blocked by the player/s he had spoilt in the marking contest.

Look at Davis's goal from the boundary as an example. No support off the overhead spoil, blocked in his follow thru and Davis runs away. Where was the support?

What more could Gilbert have done?

In terms of disposal, the "tactics" used by St Kilda do not afford a "get out of jail" player loose behind the ball - which means all of our players look ordinary in disposal to advantage - except Harvey.

We have to pin point - because we do not have the players doing what other sides do - consistently moving to create options.

We are too busy back "filling holes" and creating zones including the pathetic "huddle" for kick outs - only to find we have left a half of the field un-guarded - and opposition players having a paddock in which to use the pill.

I would be putting the acid on 10 players at least before Gilbert.

One of my mates said today that St Kilda have the "cattle" but they do not have the coaches.

I responded that it was a combinantion.

I pointed to Schnieder, Dempster, Geary, Eddy, McQualter, Milne, Fiora (and he reckons Gwilt can play so I left him out) - and then went to a couple of higher profile players where it may be the coaching because the ability is there.

Look at the possession winners on Saturday night from the bottom up and mark them off.

Look at Media "Best and Fairest" voting and see how many St Kilda players figure - just one - Riewoldt.

Why arn't our players featuring if they are that good?

gilberts problem this year is that his excitement for the game and his ability to take the game on have been harnessed or maybe even defused by a dull and boring coach who is slowly killing the confidence of all his players.
as much as we need to develop a key defender i would like to see gilbert move onto a wing and be let loose to run and tackle as he did 12 months ago.
his downside are his skills, but his attacking mindset as well as pace is great and that currently is more important to the side

If his skills are not up to scratch - why would we play him in the midfield?????????

He is 194cm.....a poor kick.
he aint ever gonna be a midfielder......come on..

he is a tall defender, with rebounding ability and some versatility

Terrible kick.

His kick while running along the wing under no pressure was laughable.

Im not suggesting a perminate switch to the wing, just thinking a free reign may release the shackles and boost his confidence a little which is needed, remembering his form 12 months ago when he was chasing down the opposition and tackling like a mad man.
that form gave us all hope that we had an exciting prospect on our hands, now i hear calls for his head.

Set them free... set them all free.

Who needs accountability? Set them free I say.

Let them run and play as individuals. Set them FREE!

Don't stifle them you boring coach. FFS, set them free.

F*** accountability. Who needs it?

A long as we kick more goals than them, we win.

So set them free, I say.

Don't worry if they flood. Don't worry if they rebound.

Who needs defenders?

We will lose... but we'll be Free.

Free at last... free at last.
