Re: Cull time
Time to cull the posters to this site. Should be done like they do to seals too.derby Street wrote:Well who are they ? - lets face it even some of our young players look dead set average - at the very best they will be ordinary. Time to cull and keep turn over until we find some GOOD players.
A wsated trip to see that first quarter dished up.

I can't either
He seems to be one of those players who plays a few good games that happen to be televised and sucks alot of people into thinking he is better than he really is, kind of like Peter Everitt really and that is the truth.
Despite his 'F-wit'ness he played a couple of stellar years, being 98 and 00
Bring back the Lockett era

player categories and where we have problems
St Kilda Player Types
ELITE (always beat their opponents, star contributors consistently)
Hayes
Hudghton
Baker
Goddard
S Fisher
PROBLEM: Missed Baker all year, Goddard and Hudghton for parts of the year each
Too few of them
ALL HEART
Ball
Harvey
Roo
Blake
C Jones
PROBLEM; IT'S A SHAME 2 OF THESE GUYS DON'T HAVE GREAT SKILLS
COULDDA BEENS (Inconsistent or often injured could-be-elite players)
M Gardiner
Milne
Dal
Schneider
X Clarke
R Clarke
Montagna
Gram
Fiora
Gehrig
Maguire
Gilbert
King
Kozi
PROBLEM: WAY TOO MANY OF THESE GUYS
B-GRADERS (SOMETIMES DO OK, BUT ARE BASICALLY B-GRADE FOOTBALLERS)
L Fisher
McG
Dempster
Rix
C Gardiner
Birss
Ferguson
PROBLEM: WITH SLIM DRAFT PICKS IN THE NEAR FUTURE, WE MAY HAVE BEEN BETTER GETTING YOUNGER GUYS INSTEAD OF THESE GUYS, AND TRADING THEM AWAY A COUPLE YEARS AGO FOR DRAFT PICKS
YOUNG GUYS MAY BE OK, BUT NOT GREAT
Geary
Armitage
McEvoy
Gwilt
Howard
Allen
PROBLEM: IT WOULD BE BETTER IF THEY WERE STARS IN THE MAKING
GENUINE POTENTIAL
Eddy
Steven
Van Rheenan
PROBLEM FOR THE FUTURE: NOT ENOUGH OF THEM
The GT years left us a bit short of young talent, (Brooks, R Clarke, Watt were all first-rounders or swapped for first rounders) and a bit top heavy with B-Graders (Remember McGough). RL has worked to fix that, but we may be running out of time with GC17 coming, and you'll never get it right every time picking kids
St Kilda have problems going forward and should delist as many B-Graders as possible, and think of trading some of the Couldda-Beens for younger players

i heard carlton is sniffing around dal santo.
put him beside judd and they'd be a genuine chance for a premiership as soon as next year.
that would be my worst nightmare come true.
big mistake to let class like dal go, imo, which will come back to haunt us.
ross must get him playing the type of football we all know he can.

The rumour is that there will be two very good players available during trade week - Kerr and Brown.
Taking the passion and loyalty out of the equation I would be very happy to have them at the Saints even if it meant losing Dal and Kosi because quite simply two of those four perform to their ability almost weekly.
The Eagles may be tempted but don't think the Lions would be.
Anyway, that's my two bobs worth - I want success and the cold reality is that difficult (hard to digest) decisions need to be made.

Was there on the outer wing as a youngster flying the flag in '66 - still loyal, still passionate!

Perhaps it's a case of either Ross goes or Dal goes. If so, I'm sure it would be Dal, who will go on to win a premiership somewhere else. While well recruit another Clinton Jones-type player. (Do you know that the horrifying fact is that - despite all the drivel written on here about poor recruiting prior to 2006, that Jones is the most successful player recruited by the club in the past two years!! This is despite the fact that he is older than Dal and despite our having had two top ten draft picks)bigcarl wrote:i heard carlton is sniffing around dal santo.

Made me think again just how much we missed Bally sat night
Quite probably had a bit of an affect on all the regular mids , but maybe NDS specifically? Thats not offered as any excuse by the way, just an obsevation
Though at the game I not entirely sure who was supposed to be doing a lot of the in and undr that Bally does cos we weren't all that winning the hard balls
Mini perhaps , but he's too light in the frame to do that for 4 quarters
We really need more mids with these type of skills, and as i mentioned in another thread, many of the Hawks/Cats mids appear to have this ability, yet most of ours are a bit too one dimensionable

Midfields who cant deliver the ball properly by foot and who don't get amongst the goals, won't be playing in premierships, and that is one of our big weaknesses. We need another big body in the backline, as once Max is gone a big hole exists and Fisher is not a key defender, while Gilbert is woeful this season..the backline is fragile, and fragile backlines don't figure in premierships either. There's a lot of soul-searching to do at the club if we are to take the next step.
But we can redraft him as a rookie. Would be a stupid move though.ausfatcat wrote:Grimfang wrote:Why are people putting Van Rheenan on the gone list? Is it due to the foot injury that's seen him miss most of this season or is there another reason?
Becasue he's a 2nd year rookie we now have to elevate him or delist him.

dal nearly won the brownlow medal as a 21-year-old in 2005 under GT's tutelage, so there can be no doubt that he can play.chook23 wrote:Nobigcarl wrote:i heard carlton is sniffing around dal santo.

what has gone wrong? why have the wheels fallen off such a promising career?
part of the coach's job is to get the best out of players. that was clearly one of GT's strengths, but i haven't seen anything to suggest that ross is in the same class.
many of them are playing without confidence and looking as though they are too scared to take a risk for fear of being dropped.
i'm not absolving dal of responsibility for his form, but perhaps there is no place in ross's dour, defensive, "accountable" gameplan for creative and attacking types.
i'd play him on a flank beside roo where he could be the missing link in a forward line that has not functioned during ross's tenure.
and while we're at it put bj or gehrig at ff.
consider this: you can't win games if you can't put a score on the board.

The lions haven't been travelling to well latley either the days of receiving from Voss Lapin and Aker are over. I would difianlty contemplate a trade of Kosi for Brown even though I love Kosi. Brown would be the only one I would trade Kosi for.Animal Enclosure wrote:Why would Browny want to play with a group of mental marshmellows?sainter104 wrote:brown for kosi ??
After years of getting hit lace out by Voss, Lappin, Aker then Black & Power I'm sure he'd be looking forward to the disgraceful delivery that Roo & Kosi get week in week out.
If you can't give the commitment you gave this year and you don't want to improve, you can go because we have unfinished business-Ross Lyon

Dude, Dal should pull his finger out. Have u ever considered that option?meher baba wrote:Perhaps it's a case of either Ross goes or Dal goes. If Roo, Lenny, Harves, Max, Ball, Fisher... just to name a few can play well each week, why can't he?
If he hates RL, then he should either fire up just to spite him, or stick his hand up and step aside for the rest of the season.
You simply can't help but to twist everything towards your hate Ross Lyon view of the world.
No wonder everyone calls you Babbelot.
Carlton will have to trade hard if they want Dal, who is still under contract.
Maybe we can swap him for Ackland? After all King and Gardiner are duds.
The lid is off after Round 2! Enjoy the journey, coz you just don't know where we'll end up. Live for today and seize the moment.
