The Next 35

Post: # 617451Post Armoooo »

Now I understand that this has been talked about a bit but with all the mayhem of the past few days it really couldn't hurt to start a new topic on the great man, afterall there can never be enough discussion of him.

We have a dilemma on our hands, do we retire it permanently, do we retire it for 5 years, do we pass it on, do we save it for Connor etc. etc.

Personally I believe it should be up to Harvey to decide and I believe he will want to hand it down, the question for me is now who he can hand it to and how will that affect the player who receives the honour.

It can go one or two ways, the honour of wearing the great number could inspire the player, give him a real sign of confidence from the club and the great man, or it could put a lot of unwanted pressure on the player, not knowing any of the players personally I couldn't comment on which one it will do.

As for the player who it will be handed to there are a few options.

Montagna
Riewoldt
Ball
Goddard
Armitage
Jack Steven
Geary
Eddy

The thing about Montagna, Riewoldt, Ball and Goddard is that they would all have an attachment to their current numbers, but would the lure of wearing the famour 35 be enough to consider them to change? Ball and Riewoldt both turned down the number 1 before Gram snapped it up.

The younger players are a difference scenario compltely, it is a big punt as we don't know who will make it and who wont, if the number 35 were to be passed on none of us would want to see it go to a player who is not worthy.

IMO the 35 will go to Steven, it wont be much of a change as he is already number 34 but it would be a great honour.

I have no real backing for this other than how Harvey spoke of Jack yesterday, he seemed to have a lot of respect for the kid and even see a bit of himself in him.

Now I am too young to have seen Harvey debut (2 years before I was born) but from the way he has been spoke about it would see people sensed he was something special from quite early on, I am feeling similar sentiments in relation to Jack (obviously not expected to be as good as Harvey).

I would love to see Steven get the number 35 personally, I am a fan of his already as he has been super impressive in the VFL this year and the TAC last year and I believe that this sign of confidence could really give him a shot in the arm and make him feel a part of the club's history, this sense of narrative consciousness could really give him the motivation to take 2009 by the neck and establish his position in the side.

Who would everyone else like to see?

For me it's either Steven or Roo (doubtful though).

EDIT: Ooops, didn't see there was a similar thread right underneath this one, my bad everybody
   [/b]

I say keep the jumper alive.... and after the presser yesterday, I'd say it's going to Jack.

Give it to Roo. Then use it for all future captains

Would be nice if it went to Jack Steven...it could be the 'child prodigy' number!

I'd say the opposite, he's too modest to let us retire the number.

Steven's the obvious, Eddy is a possibility

I say retire it and wait until the next star St Kilda midfielder bursts onto the scene. Don't want to risk giving it to Eddy or Steven and having them end up playing less than 50 games.

I think that's what Richmond do isn't it?

I'd have to agree with Goody, I think he would like the idea, I think the thought of retiring the number 35 would make Harves feel like he is putting himself ahead of the club.

Interesting suggestion, it would seem that is what we are doing with number 4.

I don't think Harves would want it retired. Personally I am not a fan of the handing on of jumpers. Personally I feel it should be retired for a period of time out of respect, then handed to an up and commer, eg. Conner....... I like the idea of Captains playing in the number but usually by the time a Captain has earn't his stripes he is attached to his no. Though they might change the way they feel. It would certainly by an honour to be handed the great mans no.

All these players already have made a number their own. Would be silly to change it.

The player makes the number.....and the number does not make the player.

Harvey was given Scratchers number, so why wouldnt he want to pass it on to a young bloke on the up as well. As for who? i guess it will be someone who work ethic Banger sees as like his own and hopefully its one of the kids we havent seen in action yet, but who goes on to be a legend

Harveys was Captain for two years??

To have a captains number it should be the number of a long serving captain

poorly written it should say.

Should not be handed down as that is not Harvey's style, nor would he ask for it.

I say let Harvey decide to do with it what he wants, wether thats burning it forever or giving it to a youngster.

Good point, off-topic what are people's thoughts on naming rights?
Surely there is going to be something named after Harvey, I like the idea of the MW becoming the Harvey Wing... I might contact the club and see if we can make the saintsational player of the year an official award at the B&F and see if we could make it the Robert Harvey Medallion...

Yep, I recall Harves had big wraps on him before his first game, to which I was privileged to witness. He had to be something special just to get an AFL game at that age....not that our team was all that flash back then.. Harves kicking often went astray in the early days and he had a run of injuries early on as well, but he was still very much a shining light right from the start.

Same story for a very young Tony Lockett...except that his kicking was awesome right from the start. We instantly saw him as our Great White Hope at his Waverly debut, and he duly delivered.. kicking a beautiful goal with his first kick... if my memory serves me.

It would be absolutley fantastic if young Jack can go on to become a valuable player. Players who start young at a club and stay with that club, become all the more ...dare I say it macavaney?..."special".

Just curious, how many jumpers have been retired in VFL/AFL history at all the clubs?

Darren Milanes number I think was retired?

Are there any at the Saints?
