Lyon comparing Harvey to Ratten and Bradley
FAIR DINKUM
WTF, saying Harvey is the equal of ................yada yada blah blah blah, what a load of absolute tripe.
Harvey is head and shoulders above those two as a player, I found his references dumb and offensive.
I can only hope his dumb comparisons were because he was spending a bit more extra time this week on team selection

They're probably pretty fair comparisons, if you're a Carlton supporter. Let's face it, there aren't too many modern comparisons, and it probably doesn't mean much to compare him to Baldock, Cable or Bartlett, because they're from another generation. Also, not everyone barracks for the Saints (losers)...although I sure hope Ross does!?!

I’ve said it in the past but it is self-evident that the best-and-fairests, the Brownlows, the EJ Whitten Medals, great finals performances, like at AAMI Stadium dragging St Kilda across the line ... of the great midfielders and the great runners in Bradley and Ratten and Voss – he stands equal. No-one stands head and shoulders above him.

I would say they would be proud to be associated with Harvey.brown-coat wrote:I bet Bradley and Ratten feel embarassed their names were used in an article about a demi-god.

RL played for fitzroy and coached at sydney. why is he even talking about those guys in the same breath? clueless.barks4eva wrote:FAIR DINKUM

some of the game's greatest players ... lockett and ablett senior, for instance ... didn't play in premierships. means nothing to me in ranking them.Celtic___Pride wrote:Perhaps you are right. However both Ratten and Bradley played in premierships, Harvey didn't. But that's not really Harvey's fault I guess, it's St Kildas.

Craig Bradley was also an outstanding midfielder who played for as long as he could - both he and Banger were probably 2 of the 3 hardest running midfielders in the 90s (and I reckon Crawford was the other one).brown-coat wrote:I bet Bradley and Ratten feel embarassed their names were used in an article about a demi-god.
Bradley in the end doesn't hold a candle to the great man!

premierships are not relevant.
bobby skilton v matty capuano or aaoron keating anyone...
the point is why did RL mention these 2 in particular when he has no affililiation with carlton? why did he not say ian stuart or bobby skilton or hayden bunton?
its a weird thing to say. so dont give me this we are just trying to bag RL stuff.
its not about RL - its about an odd comment.

Your quote says that Harvs is the equal of those. Nobody stands head and shoulders above him. Which leaves open the possibility that others are slightly above him.
Its not a time to be comparing the Great Man to anyone. Let his deeds stand as testament to his greatness.
Win it for HIM!

Its not relevant what RL said today anyway, Robert Harvey's words were the only ones that mattered today AFAIAC

Perhaps, RL has a high regard for the players he mention (Voss was also mentioned, but I don't think Brett was as good as his brother )
I suspect that the comparisons were to other great "runners" with endurance. Not the greatest players of all time.
I'm sure Harves would be the first to agree that there were better players than himself.

The lid is off after Round 2! Enjoy the journey, coz you just don't know where we'll end up. Live for today and seize the moment.

Probably amongst the other top midfielders of his time. But that's my opinion only.bergsone wrote:WHO do you compare him with? Thats the question
If you talk about endurance, then Bradley is a fair comparison.
Buckley was a better kick IMO, and Hird had that X factor.
Mountain out of a molehill AFAIAC

The only area I would rate Bradley higher than Harvey is goals kicked.
Other than that, in every other area, Harvey has him covered.
And Buckley. Daylight then to Ratten, who was very good in his day.
Voss and Hird were genuine match turners, like Harvey, and I would have those three on a par. Different types of players.
For sheer hard work and hard running, Harvey has no peer in the history of the game (my memory goes back to the 70s).
