Our Game Plan - Old Fashioned?
http://www.realfooty.com.au/news/news/o ... 49903.html
Article here from Robert Walls. If you stop reading right here, I don't blame you.
But if you read on, I have some questions.....
Walls seems to allude to the fact that Collingwood and Brisbane are no good because their coaches are old fashioned and behind the times in the sense that they are too defensive. Hard working, accountable, inside teams with inside accountable game plans.
They need to be more 'outside' and 'offensive'.
Really, I think it's just Walls jumping on the winners. When Collingwood and Brisbane win next week, he'sll probably be lauding their game plan and potting someone else.
Anyway, where does that leave our game plan? Reading a quote from BJ in regards to our lift in form....
"Not enough blokes were buying in. We eventually stripped it back and went back to the basics . . . head down and contested footy, tackling, forward-50 pressure, areas that we focused on.
"Everything evolves from that."
It suggests that we went back to the very basics that Walls is suggesting are a thing of the past.
So I'm confused now.
Do you not focus on hard ball gets, contested footy and tackling? And focus more on outside handball receives, running ahead of the contest, finding space? Specialise in unaccountable footy?
Wasn't Walls lauding the dropping of Dal Santo becuase of his unaccountable footy?

Looks like he's contrasting two styles. The emphasis is on Geelong using quick ball movement. Sure Essendon won with speed, but it was quick ball movement also.
The difference as I see it is that with Brissy, they go one on one in the more traditional way. Whereas Geelong will move the ball quickly in a "keepings off" style.
Conclusion: The old 1 on 1 game style has evolved and is almost redundant. You still tackle, chase and win contested footy. It's what you do with the the pill when you have it.

My theory, is that the game hasn't changed nearly as much as everyone thinks.WayneJudson42 wrote:Looks like he's contrasting two styles. The emphasis is on Geelong using quick ball movement. Sure Essendon won with speed, but it was quick ball movement also.

You still need to win the footy.
You still need to defend fiercely.
You still need to attack hard.
You still need to move the ball quickly.
You still need to have good skills.
Nothing has changed at all. We're all being taken for a ride for people trying to justify their positions in the game.
People over complicate things.

It haschanged in the sense that there is less 1 on 1 footy. Avoid kicking to a contest unless there's no other option. Modern game is similar to basketball in many ways.
This is inevitable as coaches look for the upper hand.
Sydney: lockdown.
Hawks: Rolling flood zone.
Us: ???????????????

Nothing has changed at all??? This has to be one of your silliest statements Rodge.
Once upon a time players just won the ball and kicked it on..mainly to contests. Players mainly manned up around the ground. One big plus for this asa spectator is that EVERY game you got to see speccies and high marks. Now speccies are rare because such contests are rare.
Footskills on the whole were pretty poor.
Today watch most teams and you will see it is all about retaining possession and avoiding contests.
Players compared to the past are highly skilled with their feet, and are much more accurate than they used to be.
The Cats are very good at it.
The expanded interchange also change the way the game is played.
Once players like Banger would outun opponents into the dust. Now midfield rotations has limited the advantage of aeobic freaks like Harvery, though all mids run more than they used to.
Nothing has changed???? You jest.

The players are just better at it. Fitter, and better. But in the end, what they do is much the same.
A team is still yet to win a flag due to tactics and a game plan that goes against the grain of footy fundamentals.
Sydney being close to an exception.

One thing that has changed is the amount of free kicks for things such as hands in the back, etc. It's almost getting to the point where the flow of the game is stopped at every contested mark becuase you just know the whistle will blow and the umps will find a free kick somewhere.
BTW, I'm exaggerating somewhat.

He sees the immediate trend then writes it as universal law.
Then it changes 5 weeks later and he looks like a moron.
Nobody is surprised.
One in particular.
Gigantic difference.
make out of this what you like...following intructions to the letter or poor onfield leadership
10 mins to go the eagles about a gl up roo stationed one out in our goal square our other 17 around the footy 30 yrds from the eagles goal
the eagles stationed one player outside 50 at chb,one outside 50 on one flank & one outside 50 on the other..we controlled the numbers 17 to 14 around the footy ..i maybe a fn idiot but even if we win the footy how in the name of hell do we go over their outriders standing alone & hit roo standing 150 yrds away
looked through our lineup & for the life of me cant see anyone who can hit a target 150 yds away let alone get over their 3 outriders
geez i know footys changed but ffs to have not one player between roo & the ball is mindbogling
can understand going into lock down being a gl up but going into lock down when your a gl down....
dont like using the term outrider just couldnt find another word appropriate
if the 22 we had couldnt beat the 22 they had we are in for a crap couple of yrs..for christ sake just go out there & play footy & leave the whiteboard, crayons, compass, set square, protractor at home

That isnt the AFL fault. It is society. Having said that what big Carl and Balmey and others did was gutless and I would suspect players these days are much harder at the ball as every move they make on the ground good or bad is put under the microscpoe. Pretty easy to belt a guy but ranning at the footy flat out takes huge courage especially with the pace of the game these days.SteveStevens66 wrote:And that alone sums up everything that is wrong with the modern game.saintsRrising wrote:
Ditterich today would get suspended every game he played for example.
Has footy changed these days. Yes enormously and to even compare to yesteryear or even 3 years ago is a stupid comparision.
Yes they may but you cannot play the actual game even the way it was played 3 years ago. Sydney, WCE style V Cats, Scrays and Hawks. look at the difference and who is succeeding now.rodgerfox wrote:The fundamentals to winning games and flags remains pretty much the same.plugger66 wrote:

Ummm, back to the article...
The point made was that Grouch's and Lethal's game style is a more traditional 1 on 1 approach, and teams who can move the ball quickly will usually beat them.
Not sure where the confusion lies.

How does a 3 Diva forward structure fit in with that thenbigcarl wrote:footy's a simple game. get the ball and kick a goal or move it as quickly as you can to a teammate in a better position. when you haven't got it, get it back. run, chase and tackle.'
a lot of the pseudo-scientific stuff they come up with is just bullsh#t.
Seriously the gameplan you described is how the kids play Little League at the Half Time breaks. Entetianing yes, effective no.
What makes a team mate in better position for example?
In yesteryear it was anyone closer to goal.
Today it is a team mate in space by himself, and preferably forward of where you are.
All the better if there are several players all in a line.
You say that when you have not got it that you get it back. run, chase and tackle.
But what is the best way to get it back? Ofen it is by denying options upfield by zoning.

If you think that was all Carl did you either never saw him, are entirely clueless, or both.plugger66 wrote:....what big Carl and Balmey and others did was gutless and I would suspect players these days are much harder at the ball as every move they make on the ground good or bad is put under the microscpoe....SteveStevens66 wrote:And that alone sums up everything that is wrong with the modern game.saintsRrising wrote:

He was one of the greatest players to have worn our jumper and the sum total of your assessment of Carl Ditterich was that he was "gutless."
The extent your football "knowledge" is now apparent to all.
Carna Saints!!!
I saw plenty of him and he was a very good footballer but if you think whacking guys when they are not watching is tough well you should go to another sport. He also whacked guys when they were watching but that isnt much better.SteveStevens66 wrote:If you think that was all Carl did you either never saw him, are entirely clueless, or both.plugger66 wrote:....what big Carl and Balmey and others did was gutless and I would suspect players these days are much harder at the ball as every move they make on the ground good or bad is put under the microscpoe....SteveStevens66 wrote:And that alone sums up everything that is wrong with the modern game.saintsRrising wrote:

So you think it is ok to hit guys. Take up watching boxing because it sounds like you dont like footy. I back my footy knowledge over you any day but you may have me covered on boxing.
