Moorabbin Oval vs Telstra Dome
Just did some reading and came across these quite amazing facts.
Moorabbin Oval
Record Crowd - 51,370 on 17/04/1965 vs Collingwood
Telstra Dome
Max AFL Capacity - 53,355
So.....I say fu*k off the Telstra Dome and lets get back to our grass roots.
I don't mind standing in the pouring rain with a poncho on, or eating a cold pie, a warm drink or a melted chocolate bar.
Taking a knee on the opposite side of the grand stand to relieve myself, cause it's to hard to walk through 50,000 people that are shoulder to shoulder.
Or leaving and walking through the mud pool that surrounds the ground.
If we could get 50,000 to Moorabbin back in '65, then we sure as hell can do it now.....
Those memories of Moorabbin are what football was all about for us back in those days.

in the early 90s when the saints got some steam up and beat a few teams moorabin was a scarey place for oppositions supporters.
even in the early 80s it wasn't far behind vic park as a terrifying experience for the opposition.

Thanks for the reminising Saintsational Man. Some great memories of the place in the late 60s and thru the 70s. On my regular visits to Melbourne these days I now enjoy the comfort of the Dome, but theres certainly no history there for old supporters like me.
Maybe in 20 years time the young supporters of today who have grown up with the dome will look as fondly at that place as I look at the Moorabbin ground.

It was a special atmosphere with many great memories for me. It's funny you should be talking about this cause I was at Carrara last Saturday and was saying how the atmosphere felt like we were 20 years back in time it was fantastic.
Standing on the grass next to the grandstand at Carrarra last weekend, my mate and I said EXACTLY the same thing. Felt like a bigger crowd than it was, facilities are so so, but Geez it was a great night.

Well if I was, what would I care. 30 mill would be nothing to see the saints back at moorabbin, in some capacity at least. Maybe against interstate sides. Maybe all games, its not impossible, just extremely unlikely.St Igmata wrote:On that statemen,t its no wonder why you are not a rich mogul.iwantmeseats wrote:completely agree with the OP> Sadly, it wont happen. If I was a rich mogul though, I would make it happen. It just takes $$, thats all. Completely rebuild the surrounds, it could be done no prob, if not for the $$$.
I think RB once slated that redeveloping moorabbin was a option for the games against interstate sides. Didnt happen, Im pretty sure due to $$.

Moorabbin had genuine atmosphere.
And it was ours.
Waverley had nothing.
And Docklands still doesn't feel like ours.
No character.
Just a symmetrical concrete monolith.
It segregates fans - There are people I used to sit with at Waverley who I haven't seen at the footy since 99 as they have reserved seats on a different level.

The rest of Australia can wander mask-free, socialise, eat out, no curfews, no zoning, no police rings of steel, no illogical inconsistent rules.
They can even WATCH LIVE FOOTY!

Moorabbin all the way.
Not onkly have the home ground advantage but we would have the home "crowd" advantage.
If you dont like having a hot pie then you dont have to come or you can eat before or after the game.
Play somewhere thats near my house and where we can genually champion our stars.
I spose im just dreamin

That was the first ever game at Moorabbin and we never got near that crowd again.
I was there and I reckon at least 10,000 would have seen bugger all of the game.
We only got 22,000 in a cosy shed at Docklands to watch the Freo game.
Supporters are too soft now. Those good old days in the rain and the mud and the overflowing dunnies are long gone, unfortunately.
First 2 years at Moorabbin played in 2 Grand Finals and won 1.

I'd love to see the Moorabbin development brought back...but with special provisions in place just in case we can develop a boutique 30,000 stadium to play against opposition teams.
Call me crazy, but there's no place like home. And when you see hundreds of other sporting clubs all around the world doing it, there's no reason we can't down the track.

I cannot remember if it was in 1978 or 1980 but we played against Essendon at Moorabbin and the crowd was 38,000. It was fantastic. As long as teams share grounds they lose their identity. As previously stated, real home grounds still exist elsewhere, even in the NRL I think. Bring the boys home I say!!! Make sure you buy some gumboots though if ya wanna use the Gents !!!!
