Saints 4 greatest of all time? Harvey not in AFL's top 50?

Post: # 595211Post markinUSA »

This is one of those arguments that you can never win.
But..

Real Footy has a story about the 50 greatest AFL players of all time.
("The legends' 50 greatest" by Rohan Connolly)
http://www.realfooty.com.au/news/news/t ... 74148.html

Anyway, they only put 4 Saints in as far as I could see:

Darrel Baldock
Ian Stewart
Dave McNamara
Tony Lockett

Do you agree that these are the four greatest Saints of all time?

ALSO... They specifically state that Robert Harvey did not make the top 50 AFL players of all time.

However, they picked BEN COUSINS!!!!!!!!!! I could write a book on why this is just not right.

And of recent players, two other noticeable inclusions were James Hird and Nathan Buckley.

What is your opinion?

Baldock, Stewart and Lockett's inclusion would be difficult to argue against.

Macnamara - I don't know enough about.

Did they include Roy Cazaly? If so, he is another Saint.

To include Buckley and Voss and not Harvey I think is plain wrong - but I'm a biased Saints fan who feels that Harvey is beeter than both of them.

There is an argument that Voss should be rated higher than HArves because he captained Brisbane to 3 premierships.

But the same argument cannot be mounted for Buckley.

we always get worked up about theses lists and bangers rank in the best of all time but lets be honest no one has seen every player so they are just going by what they think , Harves often gets over looked because hes not the type to jump infront of the media and do the whole song and dance to pump up his popularity ... the fact the guy has 2 brownlows and is the greatest vote getter in brownlow history (watch this year  ) says alot more then some silly list made up by some nobody

Another insult to Harvey from supposed experts.

Disgrace to have Buckley in it and not Harvey.

Lance or James??

Yes, cousins was a good player and won a brownlow but it is just plain insulting and unjust that Harvey of his calibre to be overlooked with all the awards, medals and allocades he has achieved over 2 decades. For harvs to still be getting 30pos a game is a remarkable achievement. He is a legend and a champion and we will probably never have an opportunity to ever see an player of this standard play for so long and at such a level. He is playing with McEvoy who wasnt even born when he debuted!

Did it say anywhere that all the players on the list had to be retired, because if not this is an outrage.

Absolute DISGRACE!

Harvey was getting BOG's when Buckley and Hird were playing Juniors, and then getting them after they retired.....

8 times All Australian...leading brownlow vote getter of all time (with Dempsey not counting)..dominated three seperate eras.....has won everything that can be won.....except an ANZAC day medal

Harvey is the best player I have ever seen play live....

Harvs always suffers due to not having a high profile. Saying he didn't captain a premiership team is rubbish. A team doesn't win a flag solely because of it's captain. Buckley's only in there because he captained Collingwood. There's no reason for putting Voss, Buckly and Cousins ahead of him.
Reading Buckley's article in the Age today he obviously doesn't think that he was a better player than Harv's. And while the media overlook him I have no doubt that all players and coaches value his career the same way we do.

Regarding what some people have commented:

* Roy Cazaly didn't get in.

* Many people without Premierships were in there: Gary Ablett senior; Nathan Buckley; Haydn Bunton; Horrie Clover (I think); Tony Lockett; Dave McNamara; Kevin Murray; Bob Skilton; and Gary Wilson.

Think about that last one... Gary Wilson. I saw him play a few times. Now he was a very good footballer. But you're there picking a team, and there are two blokes competing for a spot: Wilson and Harvey. Which one would you pick?

For what it's worth, I don't even think Wilson was Fitroy's greatest player of his era; I think Bernie Quinlan was a better player than him.

It's all good. We will go down in history as one of the great players, regardless of the opinions of current media hacks.

It is not current media hacks that selected this top 50, it was 5 ex greats i their 70s and 80s.

Ron Barassi, Bob Davis, Tom Hafey, Ken Hands and ex Age reporter Ron Carter.

Harvey and Ditterich were include in 18 named as near misses.

As much as I love Banger, I would have to agree that Heard, Voss and Buckley were better match winning game busters.

No doubt Hird deserves his place and probably Voss. I'm sure Buckley would be embarrassed.

Obviously, Robert Harvey is one of the 50 greats.

Cousins before Harvey! LOL!

Often harves gets criticised for not having kicked more career goals , but people don't take into consideration the high % of Pluggers Saint goals that were poked down his throat by Banger charging downfield well within range!
