Nick Riewoldt vs Lance Franklin.

Post: # 582410Post SainterX »

A comparison of both players when they were at their best.

Kicking -

Riewoldt- Wasn't he a real sharp shooter at one time?

Franklin- A gun from far out, a little shaky from in closer

Marking -

Riewoldt- Has the record for most marks in a season. Enough said
Franklin- Height make him a problem, the fear factor works in his favour a little, but still damn intimidating one on one.

Adversity -

Surely the mark of a great player is how they play when their team and themselves are under the pump.

Riewoldt - At his best stood up above all of our players. For example, there was a game against Melbourne where they hammered us and yet he still kicked 9 goals.
Franklin - Still to be seen.

No matter how one eyed I am the future is the only thing that can show who is truly better.
The great players stand up even when the odds are against them.
Great player -Chris Judd
Good player -Brendan Fevola - looks good when Carlton are up, but lets down a fair bit when they are under the pump

Question is, which category will Riewoldt and Lance Franklin end up in at the end of their careers?

Franklin - on track for a 100 goal season
Roo - on track to losing all the potency he once had as a forward

Enough said. Buddy already the benchmark forward of the AFL. Roo not even top 10 atm.

Thats a good point, but can you name the 10 key forwards who are better than Roo?

Buddy is yet to play injured as clearly Roo is. Buddy is no were near as good in the air as Roo. Buddy at the moment is enjoying his honeymoon period coaches will put more and more work into him and then compare. Its like wanker Collingwood supporters comparing Dal and Pendlebury. Dal gets the best tag each week while the other runs free. See were Buddy is at 25.

On the general issue, performance over a period and after injury is worth considering. Franklin looks the goods at the moment - but that's what it is - a moment in football history. A flag is what it is all about and his part in it.

Pavlich is playing better than Roo at the moment, At least he's still getting at least a couple per game and manages to hit the woodwork, rather than completely shanking it.

Well at least nobody said Pretty Boy Lloyd ;)

Would anyone dare to rate these 10 from top to bottom based on their form at their very best? Plus rank Roo in there also?

I think Roo should be played at Full Forward and he shouldn't venture out past 40 meters,at least until whatever injuries he is playing with heal up a bit......

Not a bit like the Roo of old that commanded big numbers in his recent contract renewal......

Will we pick up a player in the SSP window :?:

Buddy is no were near as good in the air as Roo.
i would actually go as far as saying that buddy CAN'T mark overheard. sure if he gets on a lead he will take the mark, but if you watch him, he actually doesn't go up in the contest, and plays as an opportunistic forward, with the ground skills of a rover but just happens to be 6 foot 5.

As for kicking, Buddy leaves Roo for dead. However, i do believe a lot of it has to do with attitude.

At the moment his impact on a game compared to Roo's just can't be compared.

If Nick can just get rid of the doubt in his mind, his goal kicking will turn around. It is 100% mental, 0% skill. I think he takes too long lining up, puts too much thought into it, hence shanks it.

You are a natural footballer, and a good kick. Just go back, pick someone in the crowd, and kick it. Simple.

No pressure on Buddy.

Might not take over head marks but guess what he kicks goals. Goals are what win games not over head marks.

keep in mind i'm ranking them on their best individual performances, not who has consistently contributed solid performances over their career

j. brown
b. johnson
l. franklin
s. johnson
n. riewoldt
b. fevola
r. okeefe
b. burton
d. bradshaw
s. lucas
d. motlop
j. roughead

all can be match winners, but i think by the end of their careers the top 3 will have swung more games their team's way than the rest...

Agreed, was just comparing different facets of their games.

Buddy may be exposed when he loses a bit of his pace and has to rely on his overhead marking more. But at the moment, he is by far and away the dominant forward of the comp and THE reason why hawforn are on top.

Roo used to be an excellent kick for goal
