CaseyScorp,

I can't see the advantage for the Scorpions seeing that Melbourne is going to have a new facility over the road (railway) from the G in the not too distant future.

Where will that leave Casey.

Saints have stitched up their future with Sandy.

Casey are in limbo.

I've got news for you barks4eva there aint no oval in Bay Street (Brighton), or Bay Road (Sandringham).

Were you maybe confused about the Beach Road Oval, now also known as the Trevor Barker Oval?

Melbourne needs a VFL partner so its full list can play football. Unless MFC starts up a seconds team (which will cost more cash than they have, or unless a reserves comp is funded by the AFL) they will have to align with the Scorps I would think.

Scorps not in limbo at all.

MFC's admin & training base will be at the Melbourne Rectangular Stadium from March/April 2010. For how long is the question. An Aussie Rules team will be like a fish out of water, and the space taken may well be ultimately taken by another rectangular code team (Rugby Union, another soccer team etc).

But even if MFC stays at the MRS, it wants to have its summer training at Casey Fields. Get out of the tennis and soccer precinct over summer, and get friendly with the thousands of people in the major growth corridor = more members. That also needs support/agreement from the Scorps, so again Scorps not in limbo.

I suppose that Bayside City Council will also be glad for us to simply purchase that prime piece of real estate for next to nix? I can't seem to see it. The local community, well known for its anti-development campaigns, would also be up in arms i suspect. Not going to happen.
A big fire went through that area summer before last.
It is all just burnt-out tee-tree.
But yes I suspect the conservationists would be up in arms if we encroached into it to build a sports facility.

Obviously the photo is 2+ years old.

All the area behind the Social Club is now burnt out.
Would be a good site for a sports complex ?

I actually feel pretty bad for Casey... call me an old softie but the Scorpions have really grown on me over the years. Its a bit sad that after years of conflict/mismangaement and depressing lows, both Casey and the saints manage to put it together onfield and just as we're about to reap the benefits of a long process together relationship is ending.

I think its actually going to take me a while to warm to the Zebras

It's pretty cool that we're embracing our roots though and it does make sense...
ppl observing that it's a bit conflictual being aligned with Sandy and training at Frankston should note that it was going to be this way anyway except we would have been aligned with the Scorps.

If I could speak to Greg Westaway, I'd ask the following questions:

*The obvious one. How long has this been in the works, how did it come about... details etc

*How does this affect our decision to relocate to Frankston? Is there a longer term plan to move with Sandringham?

*It took us a long time to establish a positive, working relationship with the Scorps... what's being put into place to ensure a smooth transition to the Zebras?
WIll the Scorps coach, whose name I forget, that was hand picked by the Saints, be coming across

*And an oldie... what were the major factors influencing the Saints decision to move to Frankston over Casey fields

I going to emphasise this question because the general feedback I've gotten from Melbourne supporters is that Sandy hindered the development of their fringe/young players by playing them in their own positions rather than where the MFC wanted them to develop them in.

Sound familiar?

A recurrent theme was that being a powerhouse VFL club meant that Sandy would do whatever it took to remain successful regardless of how it affected the MFC. An example given was that MFC has been unable to develop a key marking forward for years with Sandy plonking Saunter at FF and directing forward thrusts through him for years... and subsequently Saunter has won numerous coleman medals (equivalent ofs)

Granted this won't be such a problem for us with Roo and Kosi but the warning signs are there

I really look forward to hearing the specifics of the relationship... alarm bells are ringing

According to tugger, it's a good thing they have a concrete wall around that side of the oval to stop the waves from lapping onto the playing surface :)

Harsh but true, and I hope we assert the same autocracy over the Zebras.

If you think that's how it's going to work, you're in for a long and disappointing 5 years. Sandy will not sell their soul to your club. They're one of the most head-strong teams in the VFL.

Good luck with that though.

Thanks for the 'Demonland' perspective Nasher. :)
From reading threads/posts on your forum I have noticed a common theme that Sandy seemed to be les than willing to 'toe the party line' when it came to MFC wishes.
Hopefully part of the agreement we have struck with them will spell out what our requirements and expectations are as well as what there's are.

And, now that you are joining up with Casey it doesn't mean you get Illzy for future 'Big Carl games'!

That's pretty much it Mr Magic. Sandringham view themselves as a powerhouse of the VFL. For good reason; they are.

I had always been happy with the Sandringham alliance. They provide a successful culture for our young developing players to play in. Our players seemed to genuinely love playing there, to the point where since the alliance started there's been 3 or 4 of our delisted/retired players who went back to Sandy to play. We've also currently got three players on our list (Shane Valenti, Matthew Warnock and Stefan Martin) who we recruited directly from Sandy seniors.

The issues lied with flexibility. We basically had no say at all in which of our players played in the seniors or reserves, and where they played if they did. For example, it's damn near impossible to develop a full forward when Nick Sautner is planted there, ditto a full back when Chris Lamb has the top spot. Sandy's primary concern was Sandy premierships, not developing Melbourne players. That's fine, it's their club and their perogative, but if St. Kilda expect anything different they're going to be disappointed.

From my point of view I'm happy with the divorce. It's been a successful relationship but the time had come. It makes complete sense for St. Kilda to pick up the slack, and given our plans to develop in Casey, an alignment with the Scorpions will be the next logical step.

I'll be interested in how your alignment works out. I suspect if your club pushes Sandy too hard, the friendship will be tested pretty quickly. If you co-operate and work with them rather than trying to bully them, I reckon you'll get a lot of benefit out of it. If you take saintspremiers' approach, expect them to be finding ways to get out of the contract.

Also, watch out for the Zebra fans who will pop up on your forums! I see Zebraman has already joined; this guy is a gem. He's a smart footy follower who offers well rounded, sensible opinions. We had a guy who called himself zebgrowler, a very traditional Sandy supporter who seemed to resent the alliance and did everything he could to piss on it.

Mr Magic, if the previous results are anything to go by, we don't need Ilzy anyway. :D
