Saints midfield vs Bulldogs midfield
When both midfields are in form and firing then they are practically even and the result will come down to if our forwards and defenders perform. It all comes down to the taggers and their ability to run with and shut down the bullies key mids.
bring in baker.
and birss will be integral.

I am not so sure about bringing Baker straight back for this game.ytw wrote:

He has had very little match practice this year...and with his recent knee injury there would be a big chance of him being underdone.
I would bring him back via Casey.

Cooney is in good form, but didn't exactly get his kicks under any great pressure from our midfield in the last game, and I expect it will be a different story this week as our mids are slowly but surely working together better than they were early in the season. Get the ball first, thats how you do it.

Re: Saints midfield vs Bulldogs midfield
Last time against the Bulldogs we had Blake and Fisher in the centre at times with Ball and Dal on the outside. We went head-to-head against Melbourne and smashed them up. Let the Doggies worry about Ball, Dal and Lenny. Those three are a better centre trio than anything the Dogs can throw at us.ytw wrote:It all comes down to the taggers and their ability to run with and shut down the bullies key mids.

Cooney > Dal
Griffen < Lenny
Cross = Ball
Aker > Montagna
Giansiracusa = Harvey
Boyd > Armo
They overall have a better performing midfield than us. As our inside mids, Ball and Lenny will have to win a lot of contested ball and clearences to ensure we aren't destroyed by their superior outside mids. Tackling and pressure will also be essential.

They rely on their rucks more than any other team in the comp. King and Gardiner will have to negate the effect that Hudson and Minson have been able to have if we're going to win. Cooney's the other major worry. Even still, they have to worry about Lenny, Ball and Dal at the stoppages. Our rucks are quite capable too. The midfield should be quite a battle in this game.

No doubt Cooney and Griffen have improved. Both have actually got fit. Cooney was fat and lazy for the last three years. Griffen has bulked up (just how we can only guess).
But the real difference is Cross (v West). For years West was the Bulldogs greatest possession getter. Came close to the BM (never deserved it). Some Dogs supporters thought he was their greatest strength - I always saw him as their greatest weakness, because he was vulnerable - they relied on him so much but he could be negated. There is nothing worse than a player who beats weak teams but not strong teams. Except someone who can't kick both feet, like West.
Cross, on the other hand, can kick, with both feet and gets the ball. Smashed us the last time we played, will do so again. At his peak.

I haven't tipped us this week, but one part of me is wishing I did. Something tells me we'll hold in there and it'll be a thriller! I hope to God Brisbane is televising this game!!...Somewhere...Anywhere!!!
When they created LENNY HAYES (in the shadow of Harvs) they forgot to break the mold (again)- hence the Supremely Incredible Jack Steven!!
