We played Melbourne in what was widely described as a battle for the wooden spoon. That's all I'll say. You either get it, or you don't.
Enough talk. Time to prove a point.

Still waiting for closure ... if you get my drift.

We can hope but in 1997 we had a coach who could coach. The jury is firmly out on our current 'leader'.

He got sacked a little later in the year, but it was that game when Gutnick got on the radio at half time and said changes needed to be made.

When is the jury firmly in?

You win a flag and you are safe for the next year and that is about all.

It is all about results

In 1997 Alves got the players on his side....they played like a team and believed in their coach.

Same thing happend for some of 2004 - the first half and then the finals.

If you don't have that, you've got nothing.

Simple!

i am Melbourne Skies - sometimes Blue Skies, Grey Skies, even Partly Cloudy Skies.

Melbourne gets Stkilda coaches sacked.

Alves loses in 1998 final to melbourne - sacked.
Thomas loses in 2006 final to melbourne - sacked.

Lyon loses to Melbourne mid season at a critical point in his career - YOU KNOW THE STORY.

I remember Alves's head being on the chopping block in the first part of season '97, and I think the players met with president Plympton and after that, got behind Alves and had a pretty good season where injuries probably cost us the flag near the end. It's a pity some of the higher profile players and the board showed weakness and didn't get behind Alves later in '98. Come back Stan!!

I remember Melbourne as being the team in the past 15 or so years that, when we played them, turned the season around.

A loss against them made our season turn to rubble, and beating them after a down patch has given us a boost for the rest of the year.

It has happened a few times. Not least of which was the prelim final loss which saw GT sacked.

1998, and Semi Final - Barry Hall does his nut, we got thrashed and Stan Alves got sacked.

2006, Elimination Final, and Melbourne came from behind to beat us. This time Thomas was sacked.

Weird things happen to coaches in Melbourne St.Kilda games!!!
All those decisions were made by spineless Boards protecting themselves too.
