Until we get it right.... will not succeed
IMO Ross is picking NAMES and coming up with a structure from there.....I would go with a STRUCTURE....then add some names......this means that some good player have to miss out.....but the balance of the side would be better......ie/ more speed...

mostly agree with this post and has been a criticism of mine all year
our selection structure has been wrong all year
against the pies we actually needed this more than ever
perhaps even four tough disciplined small defenders were required given the Pies structure with didak, medhurst, davis and thomas along with their rotating mids
players like Geary, L. Fisher were walk ups for this task
how geary was not selected amazes me
attard and baker of course were injured
eddy not yet senior listed but in my opinion should have been elevated as he can play this role and we are really short of this type of defender
if mcqualter was going to be promoted (which he subsequently was) then as a small who can play small defender he should have been promoted
dempster, l. fisher, geary and mcqualter should have played back with S. Fisher and Hudghton
getting our structure wrong down back set up massive mismatches
i feel you pick a backline to match up on their goal kickers first
then build a team from there
if it means that a normal walk up start doesnt get a game because of teambalance then that is fine
Against the pies my backline would have been:
McQualter - Hudghton - L. Fisher
Geary - S. Fisher - Dempster
I know these players are not big names but they would have limited the effectiveness of thier small / medium forwards
Gram and Montagna should be playing wing pushing back and forward
Midfielders should be Ball, Hayes and Dal
The half forward / midfielders should have been Harvey (why rest this genius at all - he doesnt need it) and goddard
kosi has to be the stay at home full forward with gardiner playing lead up forward
Milne and Schneider have to buzz around Kosi's feet
With king and gardiner playing and the Pies only having 2 key position forwards - why was Blake selected? Yes by playing on Travis Cloke it releases Sam Fisher BUT it puts us off balance.
On the bench should have been run and flexibility.
Matthew Ferguson deserved a call up. He is flexible as he can play back and forward - tall and short. Again we selected names rather than needs.
King starts the game and Gardiner starts on the bench.
Armitage is the third interchange as an inside player relieving ball and hayes for short bursts through each quarter.
And birss is the fourth for insurance in terms of small defender, tagger and even wing and inside midfield if required.
I believe this team would have given us the 4 points.
McQualter - Hudghton - L. Fisher
Geary - S. Fisher - Dempster (on Thomas)
Gram - Hayes - Montagna
Harvey - C. Gardiner - Goddard
Milne - Kosi - Schneider
king
Dal Santo
Ball
M. Gardiner, ferguson, Armitage, Birss
4 points lost because we select names rather than select a side to play an opposition with the right mix of defenders and attacking weapons.
