St Kilda feared player exodus after sacking Grant Thomas

ST KILDA feared star players might follow coach Grant Thomas out of the club after it sacked him in September 2006, a judge heard today.

.....

At the time Thomas was sacked there was media speculation superstar forward Nick Riewoldt was devastated and might leave St Kilda.
Do you think there's anything in that, or is it just a bit of a sob story on the part of the club?

possibly, at the time GT had a strong following amongst the players

I believe tis dissapated much since then

dont forget a lot of these young men have played 5 years with GT and don't know anything different in the VFL

don't forget hamill and FG were rumoured to walk when Malcolm blight was sacked.

Might actually shed some light on the term 'hush money' and what Butters went ballistic on SEN about.

I had assumed that the 'hush money' was to stop him talking publicly about the Club.
The Club's QC is uggesting that teh 'hush money' was more to do with 'player harmony'. I note in the report that apparently GT didn't dispute this?

Maybe the Club was fair dinkum in its angst last year over GT having telephone conversatons and meetings with the players - it maybe breached their understanding of the 'agreement' they had?

We must be the first club in history to sack a coach because he had the support of the players. :?

I know the usual simpletons will pipe up with so-and-so didn't like GT, blah, blah, blah . . . but clearly the club thought he had it.

IMO GT had bonded likewise with the players, he is only human, and to be cut off from his 'charges' would have hurt him as well.

I dont think bonding can be one directional process.

look at Lethals team at the start of the decade, and essendon to sheedy.

north and pagan, pagan and north, when he took the $$$ north players were crushed.

as I said there MIGHT have been some chance for a return had he left with dignity, he didn't and the fact the NEW board is fighting GT, that would indicate any respect he had from guys like thomo and burke, would have been significantly dented 18 months down the track.

On the night of the sacking around 15 players, including Riewoldt, visited Thomas at his Brighton home.
would indicate a significant degree of support.

without attempting a swipe at RL, there have been times since when they have resembled lost sheep.

Robert Harvey resigned the day after the sacking.

Lance or James??

There comes a point in every man's life when he has to say, "Enough is enough." For me, that time is now. I have been dealing with claims that I cheated and had an unfair advantage in <redacted>. Over the past three years, I have been subjected to a <redacted>investigation followed by <redacted> witch hunt. The toll this has taken on my family, and my work for <redacted>and on me leads me to where I am today – finished with this nonsense. (Oops just got a spontaneous errection <unredacted>)

So the players respected him.

We'd just had14 wins for the 2nd year straight.

Just signed key players.

What was the official reason for the sacking?

I think we did almost lose Nick at the Best & fairest that year ( which was only a few weeks after sacking) nick gave a speech and he almost broke down and cried and stopped speaking for a minute and it was just silence in the room and he then composed himself and kept going..

Did he have the support of all the players?

Or just the star players that were leaders around the club?

There were quite a few "leaders" who did NOT go to the GT house. And one player is, I believe, mentioned above!

This is a team game and there is no room for individuals who think they are above walking through the fire.

Most did though so now point in bringing up that.

There was not unanimous support - that is my point. I do not wish to name anyone - but some were not unhappy and some were. Many thought the process screwed - which it was!

He obviously had enough support from the playing group to put the wind up the board.

I think that's the point. :?

Does it really matter who or how many?

Not in 2008 it doesn't - no.
But I am glad that they ALL are still playing if you get my drift!

TBH if any player wanted to quit on his mates because the coach got sacked then he's probably not the player you want anyway.

Were the players representing the St KFC or Grant Thomas?

This issue like most issues with GT has been completely overblown.
