phew Thanks Goose!! give it your best .markinUSA wrote:Breaking news: said he wants to return to footy and cement himself in the St. Kilda backline.
First he said he had to get back to walking (he's on crutches now), then training and then back into the team.
Great news!

concur
mark merenda was bagged mercilessly by richmond fans, at the end of the season he announced he was going into surgery, the coach at the time (i forget but it wasn't spud) asked him to play with a bone chip in his muscle (or something similar I forget) he was getting jabbed before the game, during the game and after teh game.
he got back some form, but basically was wrecked, they traded him at the end of the next season, but basically this explosive damagiing half forward was ruined
I dont feel a lot of sympathy for players from other clubs, but merenda was screwed over badly by the fans and the club, and i'd probably through fabian francis as another guy screwed over badly by freo.
they promised him 500k p/a to play for freo, they were over the salary cap, so he wasn't paid and promised to be ddrafted the next year, he broke his leg in the wafl, and freo told him so sad, too bad.

Luckless Maguire keeps persisting (or "Crocked: Luckless Maguire keeps persisting ")
By Sam Lienert
May 12, 2008 ST KILDA defender Matt Maguire says he is young enough to have a satisfying AFL career, even if it takes him a full year to recover from the latest in a series of leg and foot injuries.
The 23-year-old last week learnt his season was over, after breaking a metatarsal bone in his left foot while playing against Richmond, continuing a terrible run.
It started when he broke both his left tibia and fibula in a horrific on-field collision in 2006.
His recovery from that injury was hampered by the onset of compartment syndrome, which required a lengthy spell in hospital.
Last season, stress fractures in his left foot restricted him to 10 games, before he injured the same foot last week.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
One small positive from the latest operation was that surgeons were able to take the opportunity to clean up some issues lingering from the compartment syndrome, as well as remove some bone spurs.
Remarkably, Maguire played out the game in which he sustained the latest injury, being cleared by doctors to return to the ground and it was at his later request that he was X-rayed.
“With a little bit more review of it after the game and with all doctors and physios on hand they thought it might be a good idea to have an X-ray, or I actually requested the X-ray on that night, so we just went to emergency at the Epworth (Hospital) so I'd be able to sleep,â€

Saint makes no bones about his desire to return to the playing field
Nick Sheridan | May 13, 2008
http://www.realfooty.com.au/news/news/s ... 38772.html
THERE was a touch of the podiatrist about Matt Maguire yesterday as the St Kilda defender explained the break in his left foot that has ended his 2008 season.
Amid the talk of navicular bones, bone spurs and metatarsals, the young man who fronted the media at Moorabbin yesterday sounded more like a foot doctor than a 23-year-old footballer.
Maguire has had to listen to a lot of talk about that left foot in the past two years as he overcame stress fractures to the navicular bone sustained in the opening game of last season and now faces a long comeback from a fracture to the fourth metatarsal of that same foot.
Maguire said he first became aware of the injury when he felt "significant pain" in his left foot during the third quarter of the Saints' round-seven victory over Richmond. "I know my body pretty well and I could actually feel something, as I was walking, I could feel something just clicking in my foot. I knew something was wrong," he said yesterday.
Doctors at the Epworth hospital found the fracture and the young Saint was operated on last Wednesday.
Maguire has come to terms with not playing again this season and is focused on getting through his rehabilitation so that he is ready for the 2009 season. "At this stage the next goal is walking — I'm on crutches at the moment — and then, after that, get back to jogging and then running and a full pre-season would be nice, and a full 22 games and finals next year would probably be the ideal," he said.
Maguire has had a horrific injury run since round 18, 2006, when he broke his left leg in a clash with Eagle Tyson Stenglein. He has played just 14 games since and is one short of his 100th.
But the injuries haven't shaken his self-belief. "That's why I keep persisting and keep giving myself an opportunity," he said. "If I didn't think I was going to be able to get back there I wouldn't train up and do all the hard work — if I thought there was no chance then I'd just give it away because what's the use of doing all that hard work just to come back and play one or two games?"

as aways the character of saints players shows through;
Ross during his presser today- see saintscentral.com or sportal.com.au
mentioned that Matty ( and Ross) were marvelling at the amount of support he had recieved from inside and outside the club
and that Matt had wanted to do the press conferance.
Note; which was great for us worrying about him, but he could have waited longer and was totally opposite of what the swans player last year did.
