Plugger was a classic case of a champion in an ordinary team..team efforts win premierships, not an individual effort. While we were wrapped in Plugger's efforts, the team didn't do too well at all. All the eggs were in one basket and although Plugger might have kicked 10 goals in a losing team whenever, it doesn't say much for the rest of the team in that era. Geelong are showing what balance across all positions will achieve.

Bull. The team (note team) in 1991 was good enough to win the flag. An elbow to Nathan Burke's head by the "great " Gary Ablett ruined that outcome. Had plugger "stayed the course" till 1997 with the Saints, who knows what would have happened.spert wrote:Plugger was a classic case of a champion in an ordinary team.

and considering heatley burst on the scene as a full forward...imagine the free reign he would have been given as the third tall...
"It's a work in progress," Lyon said.

The 13 comprised 11 losses and 2 wins.perfectionist wrote:In the 13 games he was goaless, in how many of these games did the team in which he played win? I know he kicked 12 one day in a loss.
The wins were way back at the start.
R16 1983 v Syd at Moorabbin - win by 29 points
R8 1984 v Foots at Moorabbin - win by 18 points
The 12 goal haul from Plugger was against Melb.
R4 1987 v Melb at MCG Melb 21-13 139 def StK 14-8 92
of which the Fatman kicked 12.3 75.
A remarkable effort.
It was 82% of our score.
It was also his first bag of 10.
The first of his 15 bags of 10 for us.
Prior to the 12, his biggest bag had been 8.
It was Baldock's first year.
Plugger went on to kick 117 for the year.
And won the Brownlow.
We came home with 6 wins in our last 8 but too little to late as we finished 10th.
Thought 88 was going to be our year.

it's true that we had improved a bit by the 1990s, but in his early years plugger would have played in a few wooden spoon teams or at least ones in the bottom reaches of the ladder.perfectionist wrote:The team (note team) in 1991 was good enough to win the flag. we didn't really start to pull out of it until the doc arrived back in 1987. the years leading up to that had been particularly bleak.

Dont know but i remember MANY games we kicked 10 or 12 goals for match and he kicked 8 or 9 of them. And also remember he punched out Rick Watt in the social club after a match because he got up him for being held to six goals that game.perfectionist wrote:In the 13 games he was goaless, in how many of these games did the team in which he played win? I remember watching him in the reserves as a 16 year old before the main game when Jacko was full forward till the end of his career with us and he was unbelievable his presence was MONSTROUS. One out this guy almost couldnt be stopped . Those that remember there was a stage they would have another player drop back on him so TWO would contest and he would still kick 8 for day. I still remember the sheer frustration he would put full backs through and as for his kicking this unique freak of football threaded them from almost anywhere up to 55 metres out not like today when their lining up from 25 metres out directly in front absolutely shi--ing bricks kicking them off the side of thier boot. I feel so priveliged to have been around in that era when such an embarrasing time for this club was also so exciting with the most increadibly awesome goal kicking machine i'll probably ever see.

Sorry dont agree at all i believe the late 80s early 90s was one of the best lists we probably EVER had wasted by shocking coaching by Ken Sheldon. We had players including a young Robert Harvey & Nathan Bourke , Nicky Winmar, Dean Rice, Dean Greg, David Grant, Jason Daniels, Craig Davenport, Danny Frawley, Russell Morris, Danny Craven,Tim Pekin,Gilbert McAdam with Lockett and Loewe TOGETHER up forward. i'd rather that list than the one we have now any day.People back then praised Ken Sheldon for us finishing 4th a lot of people including myself and other teams supporters back then thought with that list we should have EASILY won the flag.spert wrote:Plugger was a classic case of a champion in an ordinary team..team efforts win premierships, not an individual effort.
