Number of players who have played for St Kilda

Post: # 562644Post saintbrat »

I don't have copy here but in the Herald -Sun today there were lists of numbers of players who have....... under several topics

one was most games played- had Harves on 364 -so was obviosuly edited two weeks ago - he is up to equal fifth with bernie quinlan- 14 more games and he will be on his own in 3rd - with another year needed to get any further up

one of the other lists I saw was the number of players to ahve played for any of the teams
Saints have had the most- 1500+- just under 200 ahead of the next team ( didn't note who)
Port Adelaide have only had 104 - bottom below University by about 20 players.

anyone with a copy can correct my numbers.

I read that in the lift out in the Herald Sun today but i'm a bit dubious of the figures, they seem a bit light on for clubs that have been around for over 100 years..................

Anyway,if we keep getting injuries we may have to try another 1500 before September.....

The list changes for 2025 have begun, always an interesting time for an avid supporter.

It works out at about 13.8 new players per season which does seem incredibly high.

ie 1522 players over 110 seasons.

I guess in the old old days before list restrictions they must have churned through 25 or more players a season.
Nowadays we would only have 5 or 6 new players per season.

So our record of having played the most players of any team might never be caught. :D

The number of 1522 is correct. That suparstar Raph Clarke was the 1500th player to wear the red, white and black, in rond 17, 2004 v Essendon at the Dome.

I hate to be negative, but this a very sad stat for our club and shows how we've been a failure consistently since 1897.......but at least we've played more finals (just) than Footscray. But Footscray joined the League in 1925, 28 years after us!

I have just had a look at the figures on the website posted previously on this thread.

We have the following number of players who have played

10 games 42
9 games 36
8 games 42
7 games 54
6 games 48
5 games 46
4 games 74
3 games 95
2 games 148
1 game 213

therefore of our 1522 players, 798 played 10 games or less - that is 52.43% of our total number of players played 10 games or less.

To make sense of that we would need to compare our % to the other clubs.

Footscray (the next highest Club with around 1330 players) have 377 players who have played 10 games or less

That's a percentage of 28.3%.

Thanks.

That is significant.

52.4% v 28.3%

That shows we did an aweful lot of churning.
But I suspect the worst of it was done in the early days of the comp before Footscray joined.
But still it shows how unsettled we were in terms of personnel.

Which probably explains our record ?

Yep, literally hundreds by the years 1910/11.
