Radio ratings- which station do you listen to

Post: # 562593Post saintbrat »

or which station CAN you listen to more to the point?

I have benefited from buying better radio that means I can preset the stations and get better reception which will override the 'nearest to ' affect at the dome
usually one or two stations override.

ABC Radio for me usually, although I have listened to Triple M a little bit more since Aaron Hamill has started doing special comments on Saturday nights.

For a very long time the only AFL (then VFL) coverage we received here was on the ABC's News Radio channel and so AFL fans had no choice but to listen to Peter "Smooth" Booth, Tim Lane, David "Swan" McKay, Tom Hafey and the like.

Used to love the Sunday Inquisition on ABC last year but they have added Sam Lane to the team and her voice just grates on me, so I haven't been tuning in this year.

The ABC is my first preference and AW is second preference....

I don't like MMM and i've never listened to SEN

774 is the only station that does not contain egomamiacs.

Tell me more about your radio Saintbrat.

I had one for several years with 15 preset stations.
It was pretty good.
I would listen to the pre-match on the train on the way in.
Then Lady E-M would claim it to listen to the call during the game.
(Whilst I constantly pester her with
"Did they say what that free was for?"
"What's wrong with Ball?" etc. etc.)
Then on the way home I would reclaim it to listen to the post-match.

It cost about $100 but the reception was only fair.
And on the train you could only get MMM or 3LO - poor reception for SEN and AW.
Anyway it finally packed up during the Boxing Day Test.
They don't seem to make that model or anything similar now.
I searched everywhere for a replacement.
Had to have preset stations so I can dial-hop.
Finally got one at Dick Smith for about $30.

But the reception was even worse.
And now the on/off switch is dodgy and I have trouble getting it to go.

So what I want is a radio (+ earpieces) that
- has preset stations
- is fairly robust
- and can pick up ALL the stations (SEN, 3LO, MMM and AW) on the train
.
It is very frustrating when they are interviewing Lyon or someone important and there is too much interference to hear.

Can anyone suggest a model that meets the above criteria ?
Preferably from someone who has had first hand experience.
Particularly on the train.

And where did you get it ?
How much ?
Thanks.

Good question Enrico, I have never been able to find a portable radio that provided good quality and preset AM and FM reception.

For me, its Triple M, theres no other frontman like BT. 3AW isn't too bad either.

For me its gotta be AW and mainly SEN. The Train thing is very frustrating!!! Been trying to find a solution for years. Best you can do is stand atthe door and have the radio in your hand, seems to help but its still piss poor!

And those new trains seem to generate even more interference.

I refuse to listen to Sex #unt, but I don't mind the AW pre and post match when he's not there.
But it is almost impossible to pick up AW and SEN on those new trains.

Best stations for me are the ABC and SEN.
Love Fine on the way home after a night game.
(When I can hear him  ).

I had been reluctant to spend $$$ unless I was sure it was going to get me what I wanted

finally bit the bullett and went to a store :) and explained what I wanted

they offered the following and when it worked for the station ( SEN) I wanted in an all brick building nearly 200 KM from Melbourne I decided it was ok :) and I could preset

Good Guys
Sangean DT-210/L/V
around $65 with the usual discount for cash etc- guy said throw in the batteries the girl didn't- but takes only 2 x AAA's
has up to 15 FM and 10 AM station pre-set
simple band and preset selection, lock to avoid acidental change whilst listening, extra antenna and an auto off selection

I have been able to channel jump during games simply
I can get the melbourne stations where I live- often not possible even on regular radios up here, with little static
don't know about the train but works if placed against the bus window late at night

so now I should be more willing to take a daily walk as I would be able to listen any time of day ( but don't)

I do know a fellow traveller each week is able to get the usual AFL stations on a radio that was less expensive but still around the $30( you do have to have the radio next to the windwo )

which is just as well as the bus radio gets too staticky for the driver who actually prefers MMM - who seem to be finishing their programs earlier than in the past- often change to music by 10.30.
But I am then able to listen to the final siren most of the way home.

ps: it also allows me to get the local radio stations that carry VFL- but only when near melbourne- found that 97.7 is actually an ABC relay station in Bendigo and Not 3SER as it is soth east of melbourne.

Definitely the ABC. Although Drew Morphett irritates me, Gerad Whately, Stan and Mark Maclure easily make up for it.

Couldn't agree more, also get the local scores during the qtr breaks to find out how some mates are going.

Saintbrat,
Thanks for the tip.
I tried JB / Kmart / Dick Smith but they had virtually nothing.
Never thought of the Goodguys.
