Is Hawthorn Of 08 The St kilda of 04

Post: # 562519Post LENNY LEADS THE WAY »

*Winning Streak

*Attacking Footy

*Aggresive footy (pushing the limits getting suspensions)

*High Scoring Footy

*Can we expect Hawthorn to lose a prelim by a goal due to Guerra missing a soccer shot from the square (sorry still better haha)

Gotta say though love watching the hawks go around atm.

The only way I could ever say that I loved watching the Hawks go around is if they got themselves a new colour combination for their guernseys.

Great point i was just saying to my mate (a hawks supporter) about the saints 10 in a row streak and his answer was yeah but look at the stats at least we have won premierships in the past 20 years.

The fact that a ten game winning streak is one of our fondest memories is precisely why we haven't gone further. Who really cares how many you string together if you fall apart at the end.

Actually my fondest memory is Friday Night Footy 1997

Stkilda Vs the Kangaroos Preliminary Final

Ooh what a glorious night.

i'm not so sure about them playing better than we were playing

but the similarities between the two teams style and structure is uncanny

No...they don't go to water when flooded against...

They also have a strong defensive game as well as offensive side.

The 04 Saints had no real offensive side and if a good team got momentum going it was all over red rover....

...but apart from that.....yes.

I just think collectively, the Hawks have more younger guys in that core group.

Whereas in 04, our team had a better balance of experience and young guns.

I think Hawthorn have more potential to grow, because of that larger grup of good yound players.

The Hawks are alot better. They are even across the board and most important they are very well drilled. As SrR pointed out, once "good" teams flooded against GT led teams he had absolutely no idea how to counteract it. No such problems in the Hawks box

So no one flooded against us in the first 10 games in 2004. that is crap. Of course sides flooded. We won because we were well drilled and played a positive game. We didnt lose our first or second game that year due to flooding, it was more like attitude. Bu if people keep saying we couldnt play against the flood then I suppose it becomes fact.

Speaking of comparisons with past eras, I've come to the conclusion

Fremantle is to Essendon now what we were to Carlton in the mid-late 80s.

Just taking on all the rejects under the assumption it will bring success.

So true.

The way people talk, you'd think we hadn't won the last 5 of 7 in 2003 by massive margins, then come out and won 4 in a row in the pre-season, followed by 16 wins, followed by 14 wins then another 14 wins the year after.

We were flooded against in every game from early 2003 up until now.

If Hawthorn make the top 4 for 2 years in row whilst missing 6-8 of their best players for the majority of the year - then yes, they will be similar to the Saints of 2004.

Until then, they are simply a side with no injuries that is playing well in May.

Another 3 wins to go before they match the '04 Saints. I wouldn't bet against them.

Be interesting to see how they react when someone does beat them though, often on a streak momentum and confidence can cover up for some holes by the end of it (certainly happened in ours) and a slip can go on after. Interesting to see whether teams end up with a plan to approach the Hawks as much as they did the Saints too.

Long way to go yet, but they've already just about booked their ticket for finals, top 4 style. They don't need to be compared to anyone, they're doing their own thing and doing it well.
