Casey vs Tas video- Mac in the ruck and Raph

Post: # 558391Post saintsRrising »

Spotted this on Bigfooty

17 minutes of highlights of the Devils v Casey - VFL Round 5 2008 match

http://dufftv.com.au/?p=133

Is only 17 minutes...

but..Raph as a HF looked a lot lot better than he did in defence in the seniors ealier this year.

And for those pushing for McEvoy as a ruck call up....the footage showed him to still be pretty raw ruckwise...and did not show him as being able to tap to advantage....and so I do not know whether he would be any advantage over Rix at this stage of his career...

Someone who went to the game posted that Gwilt looked slimmer...the footgae would agree with that observation.

Anyway have a look and for your own judgements.

Brings up an interesting point, VFL could make some new inroads with internet broadcasting of games. You would at the very least get quite a few AFL supporters who want to see their young kids on a week to week basis, and it could even spark interest in following the sides on their own.

CASEY CALLING FOR PASSION
Until last Friday I’d never been to a VFA/VFL Anzac Day match between Coburg and Box Hill, or called a game on community radio. As a tribute to a crowd - that was very small when the Last Post echoed in the old grandstand but grew to around 3 000 - the game was tight and passionate. So too was the performance of Cain Pollard and Chris Weaver behind the 97.7 fm (Casey Radio) microphones.
Despite the changes that have beset the once mighty VFA and the loss of supporters to the AFL, aficionados thrive on the unofficial website and on 97.7 fm. Pollard and Weaver are too young to be a product of the halcyon days of Fred Cook and Frosty Miller. But they are blokes with a passion for the game played at the suburban ground. Just as importantly, like my colleague Paul Amy, they understand the history and the fabric of the clubs that sustain Victoria’s oldest football competition.
Whilst AFL football is the game that besots journalists, VFL football offers fans and broadcasters something unique. The average AFL journalist doesn’t stand on a terrace or on the edge of the coach’s huddle. Football at AFL level is a magic game, but it’s no longer played at colourful suburban grounds where people barrack standing. On Thursday, as is the case during the ABC telecast, the coaches - Barry Mitchell and Jade Rawlings on Friday – offered their thoughts to a live audience. So too was Terry Wallace - and his wife – happy to share a laugh and a candid perspective from the terrace. This stuff is gold in a broadcast.
Unfortunately, the great strengths of the VFL are not being marketed in an exciting or passionate way. The official website is a perfect example. It’s no wonder it’s a target for the passionate bloggers on the unofficial supporters website. Instead of live interactive material that might attract young people, the official VFL site is boring and lifeless. Why, for example is the home page devoted to the advertising of courses and jobs? I’ve had a website for close on ten years and now have video packages on it, including a short video piece from last Friday’s Anzac Day match. It just isn’t that difficult, providing there is the will.
It’s time the VFL stepped beyond the political speak of the editorials in the VFL Record and grasped the world of multi-media. How for example was the Anzac Day match at Coburg – as stated in the Record – ‘a vehicle for increasing the awareness of this historic day’ when there isn’t even a photo, audio or video from the game on the website? If you think I’m being too hard just ask a few club officials what they think, off the record, of course!
We all know that, given the challenges the VFA/VFL has struggled to establish a distinctive identity. We know the VFL is under-resources. But surely we can do better. The changing of the name from VFA to VFL, and now to AFL Victoria doesn’t mean we have to act like someone who’s had a frontal lobotomy.

was great to see raph read the ball very well and able to set up some very good goals. I think it also showed that gehrig played better then the reports suggested. He actually chased, blocked and opened up the game for the smalls.

Very happy with both of these two so far. Would not be suprised to see Gehrig back in this weekend and raph not far away.

Yes the Gtrain was certainly better than in the reports

.....though I thought Mac was worse. though in the context of the VFL that wasa probably ok rucking..but for AFL level you want to see better than that (though he is buta kid and learning..)

I think you will find G will play this week. I hate saying this but I think his days are numbered and this is from someone who didnt want him dropped in the first place. Just thinking about how we play now there just cannot be 3 talls on the forward line and you cannot have only Kosi and G there as they are both very slow and no good at ground level.

He makes some great points, primarily that the official VFL website is crap. They use sportingpulse for fixtures/results and ladders, for comparison this is the same fixturing that was used for friday nights mixed basketball league. I can't say I like Phil Cleary, but he's on the money right there.

The VFL offers a step between the flashy and glamourous AFL, and the unskilled but passionate local leagues.

Whether you follow VFL from a continuation of the old VFA teams, or because there's a team which is affiliated with your AFL club, it shouldn't matter. Some of the older VFA guys (like Cleary) are quite outspoken about being overrun by the AFL, where in fact they should be embracing it and using the affiliations with clubs with HUGE numbers of supporters to their benefit.

However, it does seem that the AFL push, the VFL give a little, and then the AFL push some more, so I can see how there is mistrust of the AFL by the VFA supporters.

The AFL website has had huge dollars spent on it, and is crap. The Peanut does a better job (videos aside) of WoM. All it would take is an unbloated site, with easy navigation, no front page with 300 flash animations, and streaming videos that actually work well.

The video that this thread is about is a prime example of a fantastic streaming web application, you can even download the FLV file if you wish, or have a slow connection and can't stream it.

For all of those that are interested, the Unofficial site that Clearly mentions in his article is: http://www.vflfooty.com/

Obviously Dufftv and the VFL have got more money behind them than BigPond and the AFL :!:

I would love to be able to watch quality video like that of Saints games with out having to wait days and jump through technological hoops to do it.

Does anyone have a list of Casey numbers? Gehrig, Raph and McEvoy were pretty obvious, but after that I struggle.

I've been a fan of Ferguson but he looked very ordinary at VFL level. Of course it was a highlights package and it was never going to show a defender at his best.

4 observations

1) That 50m penalty against Robert Eddy was a crock of s*** :)

2 ) Fraser Gehrig was in the play a lot. Other people's reports made it sound like he couldn't get a kick!

3) Raphael Clarke's intensity is a lot better at this level - but the jump to AFL is a big step up. He's very comfortable at this tempo.

4) After increased conditioning & another summer of weights, it will be good to see Ben McEvoy. Once he starts to fill out a bit - I think he'll be a good player.

the quality is vastly better than BigPond, isn't it ... and this is thrown together by complete amateurs, so it makes you wonder. this is even half watchable in full-screen.

i use BigPond under sufferance and only because it is the only way I can get to see some games. but the quality is appalling (when it is not buffering).

someone said bit torrents is the way to go to watch some of the games but i can't seem to get it to work.

I actually watched this week's game on Bigpond and I think it is improving. But I never watch it directly. Get something that will record streaming video, then you can watch the whole thing without buffering.

WM Recorder works for me but I'm sure there are better/cheaper solutions.

And if you are still having trouble with torrents, send me a PM.

Jeeez shocking kick by phrase in the first play should have kicked the pill outta the ground.

Classy handball by raph round his head. Too good for the VFL and not good enough for the speedier game of the AFL.

Thanks so much for providing the link -- wouldn't know how to find it myself.
Fraze looked the best of the bunch, and I now see why his game was considered sufficient for his return this week.
No one else showed much. Raph OK here and there, but still the master of the limp handball.
Ferguson, who I've been hoping to see in the seniors, looked very poor indeed. Gwilt, who I really want to succeed, showed nothing to excite.
I love watching Steven run around. One day I think he'll be terrific.
Thanks again for the link -- very high quality I thought.
Can we do this every week?
