after watching last nights game and also seeing the WCE basically put their cue back in the rack for this year (see honest Johns media release basically saying WC are stuffed this year) it got me thinking , we are not a bad team but we are defiantly not a great team from this years performances and taking into account last years and the years before I think its fair to say we are a mid range team on the slow slide (unlike teams like Richmond who are also a midrange side but on a gradual rise ), and this kinda scares me .. say we tread water like we have the past 2 years (yes that includes the GT era) we realistically speaking should be due for our lean years to be about 2010- 2012 right smack bang in the years where we cannot benefit from the draft as all the cream will go to the new boys on the block in Goldcoast & west Sydney . from my observation I think WC have got the right idea having their lean year/years now so they can be on their way up by time the GC and WS teams rape and pillage the draft . in the next 3 years draft choices are going to be sooooo very important cause after that there are going to be slim pickings , now im not saying to tank but seriously should we be honestly assessing if we are a realistic chance to get a flag in the next 3 years ? if not (and lets be honest form is proving that at the moment ) then are we just shooting ourselves in the foot being mid range now ?

look im not baging the team but in footy terms no team can stay up forever genrally a team hits its peak and then starts to go on the downward turn (call it premiership window whatever) look at Essendon 2000 unbeatable to mid table then bottom rung and now mid table again (maybe on the lower side of it though) , brissy 2001-2003 unbeatable then mid table bottom rung and now mid table on the way up ?
realistically we have been 2004-2005 peak, 2006-current mid table ..so our botoming out is coming at a real bad time

I think the Dees have Natinui signed up already....so I think we should concentrate on ascending rather than descending....

i agree concentrate on moving up instead of moving down but.. what do we achieve by standing still ?? lets be real here give it a year and even the easy beats like carlton and richmond will be too hard to beat !!

either we are contenders or pretenders and at the moment i feel we are pretending really badly .
im not saying Tank cause like every saints fan ive seen more then enuff of our team limping through seasons celebrating almost wins and "well at least we didnt get flogged's " . what im saying is the next 3 years our Drafting has got to be 150% spot on if that means trading players for picks then so be it .
the team we have got now will only keep us treading water for a short time after that what ? names like Gram Maguire Montagna Gilbert are all quallity players but honestly are these guys going to take us that next step ? theres no point puting names like birss jones blake up for trade as we would get nothing for it . you gotta put up quallity to get quallity and the quallity we have at the moment isnt getting the job done
