Player Managers = PARASITES !!
A story I heard today strengthens my opinion that Player Managers are no more than PARASITES.
This story concerns a 13 year old who has already been identified through the under 15 talent identification program as the best under 15 kid in Australia (playing for his local u13's last weekend he kicked a lazy 14 goals as a midfielder). His parents have already been hassled by a number of these PARASITES making all sorts of promises for the future and placing them under extreme pressure.
This kid doesn't even know if football is his prefered sport as he is also a freak at both cricket & basketball.
I have no problem with young players being represented around the time they are to be drafted, but this is WAY OVER THE TOP !!

As I understand it, player managers get a cut of what their players are paid.
Each club is limited in how much all players can be paid by the salary cap.
This means the player managers negotiations are really only squabling amongst themselves over the percentage of the cap that their player gets.
If one player gets more the others get less.
Cut out the player managers and all the players get more because they don't have to pay for parasites.

13 years old could turn out to be anything or nothing for a start so some of those guys are wasting there time and just plainly need to get a life when it comes down to it.
I remember this kid I played footy with when I was around that age played schoolboys and played for the state ect awesome player used to be BOG in just about every game he played in, come year tweleve couldn't get a game in the school's 2nd's.

Your leaving out, the payments outside of the salary cap (legal ones that is) and I mean really do players except the top bracket need a manager? It's not as if they sponsership deals all over the place and all these clubs wanting to sign ect.

Kids who are u15 are cheap. Not much to lose, everything to gain. Whats a few thousands of dollars to an NBA club? Nothing.
Whats that money worth if they uncover a Jordan...

If you look at it from a completely different perspective.
Let's say this kid is 13, and he is a freak... great at all sports.
So a manager signs him... the kids gets a couple of thousand dollars of money.
Chances are, the kid will either
a) Give up the sport;
b) Not be as gerat as people predict.
So... he gets a couple of thousand when if he'd waited (and either 'retired' early or given the sport away) he would have got nothing.
Not bad for a kid.
Just a thought - I would have loved someone to give me thousands of dollars, only to see me give the game away at 15!

Know friends with kids playing TAC Cup and have had no approaches from managers. They may be on the fringe, but one in particular, looks the goods and could get drafted one day.
My son is a late developer and finding his feet now in U15s. Has kicked two bags in a row.
Doubt the managers will be coming knocking though!!
Although, JB does hunt down those smokies......

Pfft, if I was a player manager and I knew the kid wasn't already managed, I'd be in there like a shot - and markinUSA - you are SPOT on. Most kids don't make it in the end or lose interest along the way.
Most player managers have the players interests at heart - don't forget that. Besides, if the kid flops, it's a waste of time and money on behalf of the agent. The agent wants the kid to succeed.
The lack of knowledge about footy works in the modern era never ceases to amaze me.
Most players swear by their managers.

There's no incentive for a manager to advise their players poorly. And as a representative for the player the agent needs to identify their desires/needs and match them with appropriate clubs and sponsors. Sometimes the players' needs/desires don't match what clubs want to offer. It's the agent's responsibility to represent the player in that instance.
The margin for error and draft lottery, particularly for those drafted in later round means that having decent representation may make the difference between being in the recruiter's eye or abandoned. The recognition that players now need the package (personal skills, maturity as well as footy smarts) may mean that a 15 year old advised and mentored well may get a break they may not have otherwise.

Absolutely. The number of people that can't understand that we just need to go down the guts everytime we get the ball bewilders me.evertonfc wrote:The lack of knowledge about footy works in the modern era never ceases to amaze me.

Who could forget that parasite Peter Jess, persuading Nicky Winmar, in the week after his jumper lifting incident, to walk out of the club seeking $500k pa in an era when the salary cap was a little over $2m.
This pony-tailed wanker had no idea, and severely corrupted Nicky.
In the end Nicky and the club were the losers.
The other parasite that comes to mind is Lockett's former manager who also continually submitted unrealistic demands, I forget his name now - Hassom?, Hession? Haslem? Whatever? He was a parasite with no idea of the implications of his actions.
At least the Nixon's etc. that came later were realistic and gave genuine advice to their charges in terms of their relative worth within a salary cap environment.

The rest of Australia can wander mask-free, socialise, eat out, no curfews, no zoning, no police rings of steel, no illogical inconsistent rules.

My eldest son has just been invited to train with the U13 inter-league squad, and I think he's looking for a parasite!
*Allegedly.
