maguire to be hamill's apprentice?

Post: # 553337Post danners »

what do ppl think about hiring hamill to teach maguire how to play CHF exactly the way he did

i think we really need that presence that hamill gave us. i know we cant replace him but i think maguire would be the only one that would come close.

thoughts?

clearly i said hamill cant be replaced but we can try to get something like it

i just feel we need a player to intimidate the opposition again. and the only player that comes to mind is maguire.

Again it can't be taught a player either has it or doesn't, if they don't have it and they try to play that way they end up getting suspended all the time ie Mooney 2004 to 2006, he stopped in 2007 and played his natural game, Gehrig is anther when ever he tries to aggressive when he isn't naturally agressive he gets suspended.

Id think Hamills despetration/intent/attitude/effort even if it rubbed off 1% for our fwds would be worth a part time coaching gig IF he would do it. Super respected by players and IMO could teach young guys a lot.

Coach slapped me before a game once,

was in good gest, but he hit me pretty hard, said he was gonna fire me up.

Went on and played the best game of my life. Got BOG.

After that he used rough me up before every game.

Whatever it takes to get the beast out, but i'm a big advocate of a bit of rough and tumble.

I think Maguire also has that certain on field arrogance needed.

I still want to see Goose in the forward line, playing aggresive footy, not doing dumb aggro things like Baker.

There is no hope of Goose ever being successful as a forward...

He has been given a run there a few times in his career, and looked completely lost.. He has no natural forward abilites..

He is a good overall footballer, and may have a day when he pinches 2 or maybe even 3, but he is of far, far, far more value in the back half, using his strength and mule kicking going forward..

we have enuff damn forwards !!! we need backmen to play as backmen !! one of my pet hates with our team is players like Gram Fisher and Goose playing a key defenders and not playing their man tight and constantly looking for the rebound out of defence a defender shouldn play loose

I disagree.

I believe that we have too many tall forwards....

...But lack that 185-190cm forward.

Goose, from memory (and he may have grown) is only 190cm. Bit short for a CHB and probably fits that Steve Johnson, Alan Didak mould.

But Goose has looked lost within the forward line. And his set shots seem to always be shanked off the side of the boot. His in field kicking is pretty good thou.

How much time has he actually spent in our forward line at any stage in his career -not much I would think

Whether Goose is 190 or 192 doesnt matter. He plays tall and is another tall. But the main reason he will never play forward is because he is not a good forward.

is a out and out backman. Remember him slotting forward in the draw agains the dogs and missing some sitters.

I suspect Michael Gardiner has a bit of the Hammer about him.

Maguire will NEVER be a forward. I love the way he played his football (before he was injured) but now he is too heavy and too slow. He is a defender because he does not have the natural skill or ability of a Kosi or Riewoldt. I know we need to give him time to be match fit. But to compare him with Didak or Steve Johnson (if he played as a 190cm HF) is like comparing Aaron Fiora to Chris Judd.

Please note : Pre broken bones in leg and foot Maguire was as good a CHB going around in the AFL and in our top 3 most valuable players.I t is sad to see him in his current state. But given time fingers crossed he can get back to that fitness and form.

As to the original question, well I dont like the idea of Goose at CHF. I think his place is down back. However, Hamill imparting some lessons to say players like Charlie or even Kosi, who does well when he throws his body around, might not be a bad idea. Not sure if Hamill is the coaching type though.
