Clash Strips - What happened to them?
Moderators: Saintsational Administrators, Saintsational Moderators
Even the umpires had trouble telling them apart. Essendon wearing white shorts just made it worse really.
I'm a huge traditionalist too, but do you think EPL CLubs have no sense of tradition or history? Theyve used clash strips for decades.
Home jumper for home games should be sacrosanct though I totally agree

WTF are you on Jill Lindsay, just TELL Essendon to wear a CLASH GUERNSEY!
Of course, the AFL expect in Round 22 for us to wear our WHITE strip to avoid the clash.
WELL, I reckon we should say to the AFL "F YOU!" and wear our traditional strip - and only back down and wear our WHITE away strip if we get written confirmation from the AFL that a jumper clash at Ess/St.K games will NEVER happen again.quote]
Spot on! It's our home game -0 we wear what we want to (as long as its AFL approved).
If the AFL want to fix it - tell Essendon to wear a 'clash guernsey'.

But Essendon didn't wear the Fat Sash, they wore their traditional strip!saint edward wrote:

Had the Fat Sash still clashed, at least they could say they'd tried to do something about it.....

Its the AFL double standard. Us, the Bulldogs, Freo and others are forced to come up with clash strips to appease the AFL but Essendon, Carlton and Collingwood can do whatever they want because the crack the sads over having to wear a mostly white jumper 2 or 3 times a year.
Memo to Essendon YOU are NOT Manchester United THEY have the forsight to have not 1 but 2 alternative strips which sell just as many as the "home" or traditional shirt/strip.
GET OVER YOURSELVES YOU ARE NOT BIGGER THAN THE LEAGUE.
sorry for the aggro but this is a subject that I am passionate about. If we have to wear that apron looking jumper surley Carlton, Essendon and Collingwood can bite the bullet.

5 prelims in 7 years. 40 wins from 49 games.
2009 and 2010 were 2 of the 5 best years ever by the St.Kilda FC.
Thanks for all your efforts Saints.

If the AFL is serious about being THE national competition, it needs to get over cowtowing to the powerhouses of the old VFL era.aussierules0k wrote:The AFL is a body put in place by the clubs. The AFL knows this.
So, IF I was running the Saints... I'd do exactly the same as Filth, Bummers and Blues - cos I'm a traditionalist. No biggie.
The Hawks and others look good in their clash strip and no-one is complaining.. no biggie.
Bottom line is the Clubs should be free to choose whether to wear clash strips or not. The AFL is an ass.
In a day and age when the 2 wealthiest clubs are the WCE and Adelaide Crows, when the triumverate of Collingwood, Carlton and Essendon between them have 1 premiership in the last 10 years, it makes no sense to be so backward about tradition to a few clubs. Melbourne is not going to desert the AFL, we've got too much pride.
Over the long term, that will likely mean less teams in Melbourne. In the short term, that means making the game easier to watch for those who might convert... and that means clash strips. It makes sense visually, financially, and frankly, aestetically.
Essendon is welcome to their constitution, and the AFL should tell them that they're welcome to play without a clash jersey on an escelating fine basis that will be distributed amongst the clubs who do play by the rules, who do take advantage of the revenue opportunity, and who do play their part in the further growth of the AFL into a national league. I salute Carlton for choosing and persisting with their clash strip, the Robert Walls of the world will get used to it, and they're well on their way to branding a future generation of Blues supporters to believe in the Jumper and crest, whichever variation they may use.
The few may enjoy their tradition provided they don't get in the way of the many to whom such tradition is irrelivant while doing it.

Agree that the AFL needs to toughen up RE: clash strips. Every league in the world has clash strips; Premier League, NRL, NBA etc. It makes it easier not only for us fans, but the umpires as well. The AFL need to put the foot down. I don't even understand the supposed "logic" of clubs like Essendon & Collingwood - how does it affect their tradition if they wear a clash strip once or twice a year to avoid confusion?
The Saints are coming!
